Unique Melody MEST Fortune

The short version

What to know.

A ten-driver flagship with an unusual measured shape: little of the usual 2–4 kHz ear-gain lift, a peak at 5–7 kHz, extra air above 12 kHz and a moderate bass shelf. Sources broadly agree on a very large, three-dimensional stage, high detail, clean, textured bass, comfortable resin shells and careful craftsmanship. They split on how it sounds overall. One group hears it as warm, soft and relaxed, the least bright MEST yet. Another hears it as neutral-to-bright and upper-frequency-led, with mid-treble energy that a few find hard or hot. The measurements support both readings. The split follows fit depth, the custom shell versus the universal, and the source: two listeners report harshness, or crackling, from high-powered sources. Value also splits. Some call it flagship sound for less than flagship money; others point to its price over the MEST MKII, a high Japanese price and resale offers that fell to about $1,900 within months.

About this product

A limited 2026 MEST made for the Lunar New Year: 200 numbered units, in red or purple, sold as a universal with a custom version on request. Not the MEST Jet Black, which shares its ten-driver count but uses a different crossover and tuning.

Unique Melody's MEST line made the Chinese maker's name with bone-conduction drivers built into conventional in-ear monitors. The MEST Fortune is a $2,699 limited edition for the 2026 Lunar New Year, 200 numbered units in red or purple. Each side holds ten drivers: one dynamic woofer, four balanced armatures, two electrostatic tweeters and three bone-conduction drivers, one for each band, split by a six-way crossover. It ships with a matching copper cable made with PW Audio.

Because so few were made, most impressions come from review samples and a small group of owners. They agree it is a high point for the series. Where they differ is on what it sounds like, which makes it a good case for checking reviews against measurements.

A good fit for

  • Listeners who prize stage size, layering and detail above everything else
  • MEST fans who want the series' bone-conduction depth in a more even-handed tuning
  • Long listening sessions in a light, comfortable shell

Think twice if

  • You're sensitive to mid-treble energy or can only get a shallow fit
  • You want big, thick, basshead low end
  • You plan to drive it from a very powerful amp on high gain — owners report harshness and crackling
  • You'd rather not pay limited-edition money when the MEST MKII and Jet Black cost less

Common ground4

  • A very large, deep, three-dimensional soundstage — its most consistent strength
  • Highly detailed, with an extended top end
  • Clean, textured bass that doesn't bloat, with a physical quality from the bone conduction

Points of contention5

  • Overall tuning: warm and relaxed to some, neutral-bright and upper-frequency-led to others
  • Treble: smooth and refined to most, energetic or hot to a minority — fit depth and source move it
  • Vocals: natural to most, slightly recessed (custom version) or a little thin and cold to two reviewers

Quality is praised throughout: textured, controlled and never boomy, with the bone conduction adding a felt, physical quality. Quantity is where sources differ. Most hear a satisfying lift. A minority, including the 5128 measurer, find it gentle or polite for the price.

“It’s a long bass shelf, though I must point out it’s not a bloated, bloomy sound either.”

Headfonics (Marcus, custom version)

“ブーミーにならずパンチ力や重量感を再現できるのは、骨伝導ドライバーの効用に感じます。”

kakaku.com pro review (鴻池賢三; “that it reproduces punch and weight without turning boomy feels like the effect of the bone-conduction drivers”)

“those who are seeking bass that are large, bombastic, and thick may find Mest Fortune’s bass a bit too gentle”

About Audio (Paul Kyunghee)

Measured

A moderate sub-bass shelf: 30 Hz sits about 7–8 dB above 500 Hz on two 711-class rigs, against 9 dB for the Harman in-ear target, and close to the Blessing 3 on a B&K 5128. Tone Deaf Monk's replacement unit reads several dB bassier relative to his reference set than the other rigs show, so units or seals vary in the low end.

What to keep in mind 5

  1. Only 200 were made, so most impressions come from review samples, dealers and a small circle of owners. Many listeners will never get to audition one.

  2. One full review covers the custom-fit version, which seals deeper than the universal and may sound warmer. The other impressions are of the universal.
