About

About Audiowords

An independent site about audio gear and the words people use to describe sound. Built and run by Ben Phelps.

What’s here

Audio reviews disagree, and the vocabulary is slippery: one reviewer’s “warm” is another’s “muddy”. Audiowords collects what many independent reviewers found, shows where they agree and where they don’t, and explains the words they use.

  • Reviews: 447 headphones, IEMs, speakers, amps, DACs and MIDI controllers, each built from the published reviews, measurements and owner reports of others (11,979 sources so far). Every claim links back to where it came from.
  • Dictionary: 44 in-depth listening guides and 265 shorter definitions of audio terms.
  • Compare: side-by-side specs and reviewer consensus for any products in the catalogue.
  • Overtones: longer essays drawn from the reviews and the dictionary.

How reviews are made

Audiowords doesn’t run its own listening tests. Each review starts from a wide search for independent coverage: written reviews, video reviews, measurements and owner reports. What every source says about each topic (bass, comfort, build, value…) is recorded, and sources that are sponsored, affiliated with the maker, or copies of other reviews are weighted down or collapsed so they don’t count twice.

Where reviewers split, the review names each camp instead of averaging them into a bland middle. The score is arithmetic on that evidence, using weights published in full on how review scores work.

AI tools do much of the gathering, extraction and drafting. The method, the scoring weights and the editorial rules are set by hand, and every review lists its sources so you can check the work. Overtones essays are machine-written from the site’s own reviews and say so on the page.

How the site is funded

Some product links go to Amazon, and Audiowords earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through them. Those links are marked where they appear. The site may also show ads served by Google. Neither affects which products are reviewed or how they score: scores come only from what independent reviewers said.

No manufacturer pays for coverage, and no review is sent to a brand for approval.
