Reviewers running high-impedance dynamics report headroom to spare: Prime Audio drove a 300-ohm HD 650 and a 350-ohm FiiO FT3 on low gain, MoonStar drove an Arya Organic and a Sivga P2 Pro, an owner on HifiGuides runs an HD 600 without complaint, and Ichos calls it plenty for difficult loads. Against that, Headfonics — reviewing the same box with the same 1.7-watt claim in front of it — concluded it is oriented toward lower-impedance gear and lists limited power as one of two cons, and a strand of the ASR thread argues that anything HE6-class is out of reach. That last point is not really contested: everyone agrees this is not a several-watt amplifier. What is contested is whether that matters, and for most headphones the sources say it does not.

Audio Discourse adds the useful detail that the ES9039Q2M avoids the metallic upper-midrange glare that dogged the older ES9038Q2M. The one wrinkle is not about the fact but about how to feel about it — Ichos lists the absence of any special sonic character as a con, and an owner who moved to it from a Schiit Bifrost 2 concluded it was not an upgrade as a converter. Dynamic range, the IMD sweep, multitone performance and the 50 Hz-into-600-ohm test are all described as excellent, and jitter is clean on USB and coaxial with only faint spurious tones on Toslink. SMSL's own claim is THD+N of 0.00005% (-124.5 dB unweighted), 132 dB dynamic range and SNR at XLR, 127 dB at RCA.
⚠ vs. listeners — There is no conflict about what the instrument reads — it reads flat, and every listener agrees. The live argument is about what follows from that. Ichos hears the ES9039Q2M as smoother and less artificial than the previous generation and reports it as an audible upgrade, a difference nothing in the published measurements distinguishes; the same reviewer lists the absence of a distinctive character as a drawback. And a long-term owner who compared it directly with a Schiit Bifrost 2 concluded that as a converter it was not an improvement, despite the multibit Schiit measuring nowhere near as well. Two coaxial inputs, two optical, USB-C with a switchable USB 1.1 mode for games consoles, LDAC and aptX HD Bluetooth, balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs, line level selectable between fixed and variable so it doubles as a preamp, MQA and MQA-CD decoding, five PCM filters, a set of DSP sound-colour presets, and a full-function remote. Reviewers repeatedly note that the connectivity, not the sound, is the differentiator. Three gaps recur. There is no 12 V trigger, which Amir names in the review itself as the thing he wishes were there. There is no parametric EQ — the sound-colour presets are described by one owner as a gimmick beside real PEQ — and rivals at the price now ship it. And the 4.4 mm front jack is disputed: Ichos says outright that it is not a balanced design, Amir says it is balanced but delivers no more power than the 6.35 mm jack, and a senior ASR member questions the claim without anyone producing a measurement. The complaint is legibility at distance — Headfonics lists the small lettering as one of two cons and ended up using the remote instead, and Ichos qualifies its praise the same way, easy to read as long as you are not too far away. Two smaller notes: Prime Audio wants an auto-standby mode because the unit runs warm in a closed room, and Audio Discourse would prefer a heavier volume knob.

A CNC-machined aluminium chassis in matte black with a tempered-glass front panel, 189 x 45 x 179 mm and just over a kilogram, which is heavy enough that the unit stays put when you pull a headphone plug. Ichos calls the build excellent and the design a clear step up from previous SMSL generations; Amir calls it good looking and compact; an owner on HifiGuides describes a refinement in the manufacturing; Audio Discourse notes approvingly that it finally has four feet rather than three. The only aesthetic grumble comes from MoonStar, who finds the design as anonymous as most gear at this price. Note that the reviewer consensus here runs ahead of the retail picture: the Amazon aggregate sits at 4.2 from 82 ratings, with a second listing for the same product lower still, which is a softer number than the coverage implies.

Broadly and enthusiastically endorsed, with a specific and worth-hearing dissent. The ASR poll ran 331 of 390 votes to the top option and only 22 combined to the bottom two, Amir recommends it outright, Prime Audio gives it its highest recommendation among value DACs, Ichos calls it rightly priced, and Audio Discourse and MoonStar both file it under great value. The dissent is not that it is bad but that it may be redundant. One ASR member argues that SMSL's own cheaper DL200 already delivers the same price-to-performance and that everything the RAW-MDA1 adds is screen, remote feel, extra inputs and XLR rather than sound — a point another member answers by saying he returned his DL200 after buying this one because the usability gap was so wide. Separately, a poster in the Topping DX5 II thread argues the two are not comparable at all, the DX5 II having far more power and hardware PEQ. And a long-term owner concluded that as a pure converter it did not better his Schiit Bifrost 2. All three are minority positions in a set that otherwise agrees this is a lot of box for $250.
