Far more usable than its predecessor, and the impedance multiplier is the reason. Into 300-ohm Sennheisers and ZMFs there is headroom to spare — owners sit at nine o'clock on the dial — and the multiplier lets a wide run of planars (Arya Stealth, Aeon Noire, Noire XO, LCD-2 Classic, even 15-ohm SJY planars) play cleanly, which OTL amps historically could not. The limits are real and consistently placed: the most current-hungry planars (Susvara, Tungsten, HE6) trip the protection circuit or simply sound short, and one owner of 420-ohm ADX5000s found it short of voltage at the very top of the impedance range. Schiit itself says the multiplier does not reach Magni territory.

Schiit rates 250 mW into 300 ohms without the multiplier and 750 mW into 32 ohms with it, both at 10% THD because it is a tube amp; gain is 1.25x (low), 6x (high) or 10x (no feedback). Output impedance is 25 ohms on low gain, 40 on high and 60 with no feedback, which is why a Sennheiser or ZMF sees a very different amp from a 32-ohm planar. The maker's FAQ states the multiplier still does not reach the output of its solid-state Magni, so very low-efficiency headphones are out.
⚠ vs. listeners — Owners with planars up to the Arya Stealth class describe the multiplier as transformative, while the Susvara/Tungsten class trips protection almost immediately — both are exactly where the published figures put the line. The one dissent at the top of the impedance range (ADX5000 at 420 ohms) was challenged on the same thread by a poster noting that nobody has complained about 600-ohm Beyerdynamics, so it may be that headphone's odd load rather than a general shortfall.
Sources split, and the split tracks the front-panel switch. On low gain, or with full-size headphones on any setting, reviewers describe a quiet amp — no hiss, no hum, no channel imbalance at the bottom of the dial, which is unusual praise for an OTL. On the high-gain no-feedback setting, which most listeners prefer for its sound, a faint mains hum appears with sensitive loads: planar in-ears, an HD 660S past three-quarters volume, a Campfire Andromeda. Two owners traced a louder hum to a cheap interconnect and a nearby computer, not the amp.

Schiit's own APx report measures A-weighted signal-to-noise of 100 dB on high gain into 300 ohms and 112 dB on low gain with the multiplier into 32 ohms; the spec sheet promises greater than 110 dB on low gain and greater than 95 dB on high, and warns that very sensitive IEMs may hear the noise floor. Both are far below a modern solid-state amp, and the no-feedback setting is by design the noisiest of the three.

The largest weighted camp, led by the measurement-minded SBAF crowd and the Reddit thread, hears a clean, near-neutral amp with lean, tight bass and clarity closer to Schiit's solid-state Magni Unity than to the thick, veiled Valhalla 2; several first-time tube buyers report it was not the night-and-day change they expected. A second camp hears an unmistakably tube presentation — an ethereal tilt, obvious bloom in no-feedback mode, more involvement than the technically superior Asgard X — and two of them count that colour as a negative. A third describes a modern tube sound: gentle warmth and liquid mids over a fast, clean core, not dark or syrupy like a Bottlehead Crack.

Schiit's Audio Precision report for a representative unit measures 0.157% THD+N at 1 V into 300 ohms on high gain, with a classic triode profile — second harmonic at −56 dB and third at about −82 dB, everything above that below −110 dB — and 0.049% at 1 V into 32 ohms on low gain with the multiplier. Frequency response is flat within ±0.06 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz on both loads. Output impedance of 25 to 60 ohms will additionally tilt the response of any headphone whose impedance varies with frequency: one SBAF poster calculated the resulting HD 800 shifts for each gain setting on a 2 dB-per-division scale.
⚠ vs. listeners — The bench supports both camps at once. Distortion is a thousand times a modern solid-state amp's, as Schiit says, but it is low-order and gentle, and the response is ruler-flat into a resistive load — so a listener with a flat-impedance planar on low gain genuinely hears a near-neutral amp, while a 300-ohm dynamic on no feedback gets both the highest distortion and the largest output-impedance tilt. One ASR member reproduced the report's harmonic profile in a VST and argued that at these levels any difference people hear comes mostly from expectation, noise or that impedance interaction rather than the harmonics themselves.

Half see the point: a three-way gain/feedback switch and the impedance multiplier mean one OTL can run everything from IEMs to planars, the no-feedback setting adds a magic several owners will not switch off, the preamp outputs mute when headphones go in, and one owner runs it as a two-channel preamp over far pricier units. The other half want an OTL that commits to being an OTL: feedback is bolted onto the gain switch in a low–high–medium order, the multiplier felt unnecessary to some, one owner returned it as useless into his active speakers, tube rolling is more constrained than on the Valhalla 2 because the protection circuit objects to out-of-spec tubes, and it is single-ended only — no balanced in or out.

Schiit's own spec sheet says the amp gets very warm and the tubes extremely warm, and owners agree: the warmest-running amp in more than one collection, "quite the little toaster", too hot to touch at the volume knob until several owners fitted socket savers to lift the tubes. One reviewer measured 144 °F beside the tubes and 126 °F on the top plate; a tube-amp builder on the thread judged that normal and well within component ratings, and the recessed tube tray and large side vents are praised. Otherwise the Schiit signature applies — a smooth, well-tracking volume pot that owners prefer to a stepped attenuator, a rear power switch everyone grumbles about, a 40–50 second start-up delay, and a gain switch whose low–high–medium order baffles people.

27 W typical power consumption in a 9 x 6 x 2-inch chassis (3.25 inches with tubes), 7 lb, internal 48 VA linear transformer. Schiit's own spec line reads: amp gets very warm, tubes get extremely warm; should be placed in a cool, well-ventilated location; this is normal and the amp is designed to easily exceed its 5-year warranty despite the heat.
Sources split, and the split is about the launch, not the box. On the box there is no argument: a hefty stamped-steel chassis built in Texas, firm tube sockets, tight tactile switches, an immaculate finish, and a five-year warranty (tubes 90 days). The argument is reliability. Units from the first shipping batches — before about May 9, 2025 — had a protection circuit set to trip on second-harmonic distortion at too low a threshold, so the amp muted for 20–30 seconds every ten to thirty minutes even on stock tubes and 300-ohm headphones. Schiit acknowledged it on Head-Fi within three weeks of launch, changed the setting on production and replaced early boards under warranty, and owners of replacement units report none of it since. A smaller tail of unrelated faults remains: a European unit whose left channel dropped and hissed, one unit that died after three days as a preamp in January 2026, and channel drop-outs on the preamp output across two units for one owner.

Schiit's statement on the Head-Fi thread (Martin Schindler, 2025-05-18) says the circuit trips on overcurrent and above a set level of second-order harmonic distortion, that the threshold was raised for units shipping on or after May 9, 2025, and that earlier units can be sent in for the adjustment; owners describe the fix as a board replacement rather than a tune-up. The maker's APx report shows DC offset at the output of under 2 mV into 300 ohms and under 10 mV into 32 ohms with the multiplier, which is what the protection system exists to police.
⚠ vs. listeners — Schiit's position is that the early units behaved exactly as designed and merely tripped too eagerly; the owners who were muted every ten minutes on stock tubes experienced it as a fault. The majority language is superlative — a milestone in tube-amp price/performance, the best OTL under $1,000, the greatest bargain in audio, a no-brainer — and it rests on a specific claim: no other sub-$1,000 OTL drives planars and dynamics alike with this much power and this little noise. The dissent is not that it is bad. It is that it is good with everything and great with nothing, that first-time tube buyers should not expect a night-and-day change from a good solid-state amp, that $400 would feel right, and that owners who only run HD 600s or HD 650s could keep a Valhalla 2 and save the money.
