Two separate Audio Precision benches, five years apart and on two different converter chips, both land at or beyond the analyser's floor, and the listening reviews describe the same thing in their own vocabulary. The only recurring reservation is a matter of character rather than fidelity — several reviewers find it accurate to the point of being unromantic, with a soundstage that reads flat next to DACs voiced to flatter.

SoundStage!'s APx555 bench beat RME's own published figures: THD 0.00006% against a claimed <0.0001%, A-weighted SNR 124 dB against 123 dB, channel separation 129 dB, and digital linearity essentially perfect down to -120 dBFS and within 2 dB at -140 dBFS. ASR measured SINAD 115 dB at the standard 4 V output, rising to 117 dB at around 7 V, with distortion products at -130 dB. Jitter immunity held until 900 ns of injected jitter.
Sources split, and the split tracks the headphone rather than the listener. On paper and on high-impedance dynamics it is generous — 1.5 W into 32 ohms, and a bench-measured 389 mW into 300 ohms. On low-impedance planars, two reviewers describe an amp that runs out of current rather than volume: compressed microdynamics, and a hard, bright edge. RME's manual admits a deliberate current ceiling of roughly 260 mA per channel, which is the most plausible explanation for both accounts being true.
Measured
SoundStage!'s bench read 1.48 W into 32 ohms, 389 mW into 300 ohms and 211 mW into 600 ohms from the Extreme Power jack, with a maximum 11.4 Vrms. The IEM jack is a different device: 17.9 mW into 32 ohms, deliberately. ASR measured 310 mW into 300 ohms and 1.5 W into 33 ohms.
⚠ vs. listeners — The numbers explain the split rather than settle it. Voltage swing is not the constraint — current is. RME's manual sets a maximum output current of around 260 mA per channel, and the two dissenting reviewers were both listening on planars and low-impedance dynamics; on the one comparably hard load he tried, a 25-ohm, very insensitive Ether CX, Amir could push the amp into audible distortion too. Which headphone a reviewer reached for decided the verdict.

Noise

The second, dedicated IEM output exists specifically so that hyper-sensitive in-ears get a genuinely black background, and the bench figures bear that out. The digital volume control also removes the usual low-volume channel-imbalance complaint entirely.

SoundStage!'s bench put IEM-output noise below 0.6 uV A-weighted at 24/96, low enough that the analyser's own noise had to be subtracted to report it, and measured left-right channel tracking within about 0.01 dB across the entire volume range. ASR measured 89 dB SINAD at a 50 mV output, which he noted still beats most headphone amplifiers.
⚠ vs. listeners — One published spec did not survive the lab. RME quotes 0.1 ohm output impedance at the Phones jack and every editorial review repeats it; the APx555 read 0.66-0.86 ohm. That is still low enough to leave a multi-driver in-ear's frequency response essentially untouched, but it is roughly seven times the claimed figure.

A five-band parametric EQ with twenty presets and per-channel adjustment, six selectable reconstruction filters, crossfeed, bass and treble, a variable loudness contour, a stereo-width control, mid/side processing, a real programmable remote, both balanced and single-ended outputs, and a bit-test mode. Nobody found a rival that matches the list.

RME's spec sheet: USB, coaxial and optical S/PDIF in (AES/EBU and ADAT compatible), PCM to 768 kHz and DSD over USB, balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA out with four hardware reference levels, plus separate Extreme Power and IEM headphone jacks. The DSP runs at 2.17 gigaFLOPS alongside the FPGA, and every EQ and tone control adjusts in 0.5 dB steps.
Ergonomics

Reviewers praise the informative display, the well-judged remote, the AutoDark blackout mode and a manual several call the best they have read. Owners, given a few hundred hours, are the ones who report menu fatigue — and on the one retail page with per-topic counts, the interface is the single subject where negative mentions outnumber positive ones.

Amazon's per-topic tallies on the US listing are the clearest count available: of 13 customers who mention the user interface, 4 are positive and 9 negative, and mentions of the manual split 5 and 5. Every other topic on that page runs strongly positive. RME also ships a free desktop app, ADI-2 Remote, that puts the whole menu on a computer screen — the workaround forum regulars recommend most often.

Strong consensus · 5 srcBroadly agreed and rarely dwelt on: a compact aluminium half-rack case made in Germany, gold-plated connectors, metal knobs and a claimed footprint of 215 x 52 x 150 mm at 1 kg. The two reservations are consistent rather than contradictory — the four front buttons and the remote are plastic, and the box is small and light enough to look insubstantial stacked on full-width components.

Sources split on whether the price buys something unique or something most people will not use. The majority argues that no other box at the money combines this conversion with this much DSP, a preamp and two headphone outputs. The minority argues, correctly, that the measured conversion is matched for a fraction of the money, and that if the EQ and filters stay switched off you are paying for a feature list rather than a sound.
