The smaller LinnStrument: 128 pads in a 16 × 8 grid, 51 semitones (just over four octaves), 399 mm wide and 1.81 kg. Not the large LinnStrument, which is 25 × 8 = 200 pads, 60 semitones, 570 mm and $1,599. Same sensor, same pad size, same open-source OS; the 128 additionally drops the DC power inlet, shows 8 sequencer steps at a time instead of 16, and ships in a neoprene sleeve rather than a padded zip case.

Roger Linn built the drum machine that defined the 1980s and the MPC that defined the decade after it. The LinnStrument is his answer to a different problem: that a MIDI keyboard reduces a note to an on switch with a number attached. Every one of its silicone squares senses strike velocity, sideways position, front-to-back position and pressure — independently, polyphonically — so vibrato, slides and swells come from the fingers already playing the note rather than from a wheel your other hand has to reach for.

The 128 is the smaller of the two models: sixteen columns instead of twenty-five, four octaves instead of five, backpack-sized, and $450 cheaper. It is otherwise the same instrument, made in small runs in California, sold direct, and still gaining firmware a decade after launch. It is also a controller with no sound of its own, no knobs, no faders and no screen, at a price where most rivals hand you a full studio — which is why the arguments about it are less about quality than about whether the trade is one you want to make.

A 128-pad expressive MIDI controller — a 16 × 8 grid of silicone squares, each sensing velocity, pressure and finger movement on both axes, laid out like a string instrument in fourths so a chord shape is the same shape in every key. Sources agree on the fundamentals. The build is exceptional and unusually repairable: an aluminium and steel chassis with cherry-wood sides, and a maker who ships you the part and a video rather than asking for the unit back. Everything is configured from the front panel — no editor app, no drivers, four saved presets, plus splits, CC faders, an arpeggiator and a step sequencer — and the operating system is open source and still being updated. It carries full-size 5-pin MIDI in and out, a footswitch jack and USB that will run it from a phone. Three things genuinely divide reviewers. The playing surface barely moves: one camp finds pressure and pitch tracking more consistent than any moving key, the other finds velocity less accurate than a good drum pad and hard to place without looking — and Roger Linn's own documentation says both are true of how the sensor works. Whether the software around it is still an obstacle depends on when the reviewer wrote: the 2016–18 verdict was that MPE support was thin, while the controller's one-channel mode drives any synth and Ableton Live has had MPE since 2021. And owners disagree about the size — buyers of the 128 say the nine semitones they gave up are not missed, but Roger Linn reports the large model outsells it two to one. At $1,149 with no sound engine, it is a deliberate instrument purchase, and it asks for practice before it pays.

The whole product, and the one thing sources genuinely fight about. Each of the 128 squares is 17 mm across, separated by shallow troughs, under a 2 mm sheet of translucent silicone that compresses about a millimetre — so there is almost no travel. What that buys is remarkable: reviewers who measured the MIDI output describe pressure, pitch-bend and timbre curves that are smooth, repeatable and lag-free, and pitch quantisation that snaps a note in tune while still letting you wobble it. What it costs is velocity. The maker's own limitations page explains why — a pad infers a strike from a pressure envelope rather than timing a key between two contacts — and owners feel it: very light taps can go unregistered, and players trying to finger-drum report the surface guessing at how hard a hit was. A third party now sells an aftermarket 'speedbumpy' surface purely so you can find the rows without looking. Two real properties of one sensor, described by people who wanted different things from it.

Maker's spec and limitations list: 128 pads in a 16 × 8 grid, each sensing velocity, release velocity, X, Y and Z; Y travel is capped at the pad's 17 mm depth; about 50 simultaneous touches, or 15 in MPE mode (MIDI's 15 per-note channels); minimum 10 mm between two touches. Two hard sensing limits: no more than three pads in one column, and if three pads form three corners of a rectangle the fourth corner is ignored. The playing surface is 2 mm of 40-durometer silicone, chosen because thicker material spreads the force and reduces sensitivity to light touches, and because foam cannot be translucent for the LEDs beneath.

⚠ vs. listeners — The objective data supports both camps at once rather than settling them. Anderton's MIDI captures show pressure, CC74 and pitch-bend streams that are visibly consistent; the maker's own page says velocity is inherently less accurate here than on a weighted keybed or a dedicated drum pad, and names the engineering reason. The disagreement is really about which of those two facts your playing depends on.

Sources split, and the split tracks when they were written. The controller side is not in dispute: it is USB class-compliant, needs no driver and no editor application, and its default one-channel mode sends ordinary MIDI that any synth understands, with a smart scheme that gets polyphonic pressure across even without MPE. What was contested is the ecosystem. In 2016 Sound On Sound warned that only a handful of DAWs handled per-note channels properly and that Live, Studio One, Digital Performer and Pro Tools made it painful; in 2018 Anderton called the instrument you drive the real hurdle, and Ableton owners on Reddit were duplicating tracks by hand to fake MPE. Most of that has since moved: Ableton Live has supported MPE since Live 11 in 2021, and as of Live 12 every Live instrument does. What has not changed is that the LinnStrument is a musical instrument first — treat it as a general-purpose control surface and you will be adding MIDI routing yourself.

This is really the 128-versus-200 question, and owners land on both sides of it. The case for the small one is straightforward: 399 mm wide, 1.81 kg, runs off USB bus power from a laptop, an iPad or a phone, fits a backpack, and gives up nine semitones — 51 against 60 — for roughly $450. Owners who bought it say the range never became a problem and the portability is exactly why they chose it. The case against is Roger Linn's own: he compares the difference to a 15-fret versus a 24-fret guitar, notes that the 128 shows only eight sequencer steps at a time instead of sixteen and ships with a thin neoprene sleeve rather than a padded case, and reports that the large model outsells the 128 two to one. Neither model has a battery or wireless MIDI, so 'portable' here means it travels well, not that it plays untethered.

The clearest agreement in the whole set, and the reason owners talk about keeping one for a decade. The chassis is steel and aluminium with rounded cherry-wood sides that let it rest on your legs; the jacks are bolted to metal and do not wobble; the surface is a single replaceable silicone sheet over a replaceable sensor. Reviewers reach for 'super build quality' and 'the feeling of high quality pervades throughout', and owners independently praise how serviceable it is — the design is simple enough that they expect to be able to fix it years from now. That is not wishful thinking: the maker's stated repair policy is to post you the part with a video, and every documented fault is a ten-to-thirty-minute screwdriver job. Small caveats: a hot delivery truck can leave the silicone temporarily loose (the official fix is twenty minutes in the fridge), a loose panel screw can kill Y-axis response in a column, and one owner notes audible 'fret noise' from the troughs during slides.

There are no knobs, no faders and no screen — eight labelled buttons down the left edge, and the playing surface itself doubles as the interface. Hold a button, tap a pad under a printed label, and that is the setting changed; parameters that look limited to a few printed options turn out to open a full 0–127 range drawn in huge dot-matrix digits when you hold the label. Reviewers expected this to be awkward and found the opposite: Sound On Sound calls it unfamiliar but dead easy and fast, and Anderton notes that every editable function lives on the panel, so there is no editor app to be abandoned in five years. Four snapshots save and recall. Beyond setup, the surface takes on other jobs — a split into two zones, either half turned into eight CC faders, the bottom row reassigned to sustain, strum, modulation or arpeggiator rate, plus an expressive arpeggiator and a step sequencer with per-step pitch and pressure. The honest limits: the panel legends are hard to read under stage lighting, and some functions take a manual read to find at all.

It’s an unfamiliar programming system, for sure, but actually it’s dead easy to grasp, and super–fast in use.

Deliberately thin as a bundle and unusually generous as a platform. There is no bundled sample library and no full DAW: what ships is a Bitwig Studio 8-Track licence, with the maker also pointing owners at the free Surge XT synth, which carries a LinnStrument-optimised sound set, and at a free MPE library for Logic and MainStage. What everyone actually praises is the operating system. It is open source, Arduino-based, downloadable, and still being developed — version 2.3.4 arrived in May 2026, more than eleven years after launch, adding mid-song transposition. Because there is no editor application and no driver, there is nothing to be orphaned by a future OS update, which several sources call out explicitly as a reason the instrument should age well.

You get two full-size 5-pin DIN sockets — MIDI in as well as out, so the arpeggiator can slave to external clock — a USB-B port that carries MIDI and power, and a quarter-inch jack that takes a single or dual footswitch assignable to sustain, octave jumps, tap tempo, arpeggiator or control-change messages. Reviewers note the jacks are bolted firmly to the metal chassis, and that power draw is low enough to run the instrument from an iPhone or iPad through an adapter. The gaps are real and mostly deliberate: no Bluetooth, no wireless MIDI, no CV or gate, no OSC (the maker cites lack of demand, and points out that the open-source firmware means anyone could add it), and — unlike the large model — no DC power inlet at all, since so few owners ever used one. Owners also warn that driving hardware synths over USB is flakier than using the DIN sockets, which is a general MIDI-over-USB truth rather than a LinnStrument fault.
