Sources split, and this is the aspect the product exists for. One camp calls the RM3 Grand II the most convincing piano action available on any controller; the other says it is a 2013 design with a real ceiling — fast repeated notes and even response toward the back of the key. Kawai's own answer explains why: the flagship action would not fit, so the VPC1 uses a shorter keystick.

Kawai's spec sheet: 88 wooden keys, grade-weighted hammers, let-off simulation, triple-sensor key detection and bass counterweights. Kawai's own Q&A says "it would not be possible to include the 'Grand Feel' action in the VPC1 without a considerable increase to the chassis size", so the board runs a shorter keystick than the MP11 and Concert Artist pianos.
⚠ vs. listeners — The spec supports both camps rather than settling them. Triple sensors genuinely improve same-note repetition against the two-sensor beds most controllers use, which is what the enthusiasts feel; the shorter keystick genuinely reduces leverage further up the key, which is what the critics run into at speed. Kawai's own staff have twice said in public that this is not the company's best action.

Most sources conclude that nothing else buys this action, and the strongest of those verdicts were written when the board sold for about $1,849. At the current $2,999 US list a dissenting camp argues the same money buys a stage piano with speakers, sounds and an audio interface — and Thomann's US shop sells the identical board for $1,268, so what it is worth partly depends on where you buy it.

Strong consensus · 6 srcThe most agreed-on thing about the board. The chassis is metal and wood with a reinforced key frame, and reviewers reach for words like indestructible. A small but real minority of owners report otherwise: chipping black finish after a couple of years, a damper pedal that failed, and one report of dead keys. Thomann's 121 ratings contain no one-star reviews at all; Amazon's much smaller US sample contains three.

VPC Editor is the whole software story, and it is a good one: five developer-approved touch curves made with the makers of Ivory, Alicia's Keys, Galaxy and Pianoteq, arbitrary custom curves, per-note velocity offsets and MIDI routing. Worth knowing that nothing else is included — no DAW, no piano library — so the sound source is a separate purchase on top of the price.

USB and five-pin MIDI run at the same time, and it will even pass other MIDI gear through to the computer. Windows users installing VPC Editor need Kawai's separate USB-MIDI driver.

⚠ vs. listeners — That jitter is real but contested in its consequences: the same thread argues it is small against the total latency of a software piano plus audio driver, where nothing you would notice survives. Recorded rather than resolved.
