JDS claims 3.2 W into 32 ohms and both independent labs essentially confirmed it — Amir measured a ton of power with no clipping at 33 or 300 ohms, and Headphones.com measured 3 W into 32 ohms with about 10 VRMS available into any load of 32 ohms or higher. In practice that means reviewers ran out of nerve before the amp ran out of headroom: it drove the notoriously stubborn HIFIMAN HE6se V2, the Modhouse Tungsten, DCA planars and the HD 800 S without strain, while still behaving with Campfire Andromedas. The auto-gain scheme flips to high gain as you pass 0 dB so you rarely think about it, and the gain structure is arranged so that maximum volume on the dial is the maximum the amp can cleanly deliver into 32 ohms. The only ceilings anyone found are exotic: Audiophile-Heaven thinks an original HIFIMAN Susvara asks more than it has, and one owner wanted a little more for the quietest passages on an HE6se.

Independently corroborated twice — Headphones.com measured 3 W into 32 Ω on an APx555B and Audio Science Review measured no clipping at either 33 Ω or 300 ohms on an APx555, with output impedance described as essentially zero (Headphones.com read it as 0.22 Ω single-ended). Clipping only appears below 32 Ω. Fourteen paralleled OPA1692 buffers on ±17 V rails, fed by an external 17 VAC transformer; the unit will not run from USB-C alone.
Silent where it counts, with one asterisk worth knowing before you buy. Every listening report agrees: no hiss with sensitive IEMs, no hum, no grain — Headphones.com measured 87 dB of THD+N at a 50 mV output into a 12 ohm load, which is IEM territory and only a few dB off the best measuring sources at any price, and about 5 dB ahead of a Chord Mojo 2. Because the volume control is digital, there is also no channel imbalance at whisper level, a failing of most analogue pots. The asterisk is the USB path: Amir found meaningful USB-induced noise until he grounded his analyzer, and cleared the rest by inserting JDS's Synapse isolator — which is a $69 accessory, and which JDS's own spec sheet footnote says was in circuit for every published figure. At least one ASR voter marked the unit down for exactly that. In practice most desktop setups do not show a ground loop, and several owners with noisy gaming PCs report dead-silent backgrounds either way.

Headphones.com measured 120.7 dB SNR, 119.5 dB dynamic range (AES17) and 1.8 µVrms of noise in the audio band (44 µVrms measured out to 1 MHz), and confirmed perfect channel matching at every volume setting because the attenuator is digital. The caveat is in JDS's own footnote — 'All measurements observed via USB C @ 48k with Synapse' — and Amir independently hit USB-induced noise before adding that same $69 isolator.

Strong consensus · 7 srcThe design goal, and reviewers land on it almost as one: nothing added, nothing taken away. Headphones.com's bench data makes the case directly — performance through the headphone output at 300 ohms is nearly identical to the DAC's own RCA outputs, which is as close to proof of an inaudible amplifier stage as this kind of testing gets — and Amir put distortion at roughly −130 dB, low enough that SINAD becomes a measurement of noise rather than distortion. Listeners describe the same thing in their own vocabulary: a wire with gain, no coloration, nothing pushed forward and nothing rolled off. The single dissent is Audiophile-Heaven, which hears a slightly smoothed top end and voices set marginally back compared with the Element III. Worth knowing, but nothing in the measured behaviour supports it, and the parametric EQ makes any such preference adjustable anyway.

Manufacturer: SINAD 117 dB on low gain and 118 dB on high gain at 1 kHz, THD+N below 0.00025% across 20 Hz–20 kHz, frequency response ±0.1 dB, linearity ±0.02 dB at −90 dBFS. Audio Science Review measured distortion at about −130 dB — 'vanishingly small', with SINAD then limited by noise rather than distortion — placing it in ASR's 'very competent' DAC tier and above average among headphone amps, and called wideband response and multitone performance excellent to state of the art. Headphones.com found THD+N flat versus frequency at the RCA outputs and effectively flat at the headphone output, with no unusual low-level behaviour. The converter is the same ES9018K2M ESS chip JDS used in the Element III; the maker says it tested the newer ES9038Q2M and AKM parts and got no more performance from them.
⚠ vs. listeners — One reviewer of the eight hears a mild character: a smoother, more relaxed treble than the Element III and voices sitting fractionally behind the instruments. Nothing in the frequency response (flat to ±0.1 dB) or the distortion figures gives that a physical basis, and no other source reports it — but if you are upgrading from an Element III specifically for more edge, it is the one contrary impression on record.
Split down the middle by design. On one side sits the reason most buyers are here: 12 bands of parametric EQ running on the device's own XMOS processor, with separate profiles for the headphone and preamp outputs, thousands of importable headphone presets, plus configurable loudness, crossfeed and stereo width — all edited in a browser and written to the hardware, so the correction follows the box to another PC, a phone or a PS5. Reviewers who measure for a living call this UI the best in the category and wish everyone did it. Firmware has kept adding: v1.2.0 brought full EQ over the optical input, and Core is now a native Android and iOS app as well as a web page. On the other side is a short, pointed list of things a $549 box does not have: no balanced circuitry anywhere, no remote, no coaxial input, no Bluetooth, one USB-C and one TOSLINK in and RCA out, and an external AC transformer it cannot run without. ASR's sharpest critic laid the whole gap out against an RME ADI-2 DAC, and objected to needing an online account to store presets — a criticism that has aged somewhat, since ten presets now live on the device itself.

Moderate · 8 srcThe knob is the star and the reviews are close to embarrassing about it — a custom optical encoder on a steel shaft with fifty per cent more fins than the last one, no wobble, 0.5 dB steps, and acceleration when you spin it fast. Ear Fidelity, who found the Element III's knob loose, says the new one fixes it outright. Pressing it toggles headphone and preamp output, each remembering its own volume and EQ, and the auto-gain scheme means you never choose a gain mode; Amir names it a favourite feature. Against that: the power and output switches live at the back, which Amir finds less convenient than front controls; there is no remote; the OLED menu is terse enough that Core is really the intended interface; Headphones.com flags one genuinely annoying UI bug where disabling an EQ band zeroes its gain instead of bypassing it, which makes A/B comparison awkward. And it runs warm — Audiophile-Heaven says hot enough not to stack anything on it, and an owner cross-shopping an RME found it hotter still, though not uncomfortable to touch.

Gain toggles automatically between 1.0× and 5.0× as the dial passes 0 dB. 5.8 × 5.8 × 1.6 in, 570 g.
Machined aluminium, assembled in Illinois, and nobody has much to complain about. Reviewers describe immaculate fit, a finish that resists fingerprints and scratches on the standard black anodising, a Gorilla Glass window set flush into the top plate, and an internal layout — thirteen regulators, a dedicated LT3045 for the converter, a custom bearing carrying the encoder shaft — that Ear Fidelity calls almost overengineered. A two-year transferable warranty sits behind it, and JDS's direct support turns up in owner review after owner review, usually by the founder's first name. The only dents are cosmetic and confined to the optional parts: one verified buyer docked a star for visible flaws in the 3D-printed clear resin knob and the Synapse's glass, and Audiophile-Heaven notes the transparent wheel is a fingerprint magnet. The standard unit draws neither complaint.

Sources split, and not over whether the Element IV is good — over what $549 is buying. The larger camp treats it as the class benchmark: a measurably finished DAC, 3.2 watts of amplifier, and hardware parametric EQ in one American-made box, which Headphones.com calls its outright recommendation for a DAC/amp under $1,000 and ecoustics rates above pricier Schiit alternatives for refinement and adjustability. Ear Fidelity, noting the Element III cost $100 less four years ago, calls the upgrade a steal. The counter-camp starts from the same measurements and asks what justifies the number: an ESS converter first shipped in 2013, an external wall-wart transformer at a price point where rivals integrate the supply, single-ended-only I/O, no remote — and a maker whose Atom line still sells around $130. Cross-shoppers put it against a Topping D50 III plus a Schiit amp for similar money, or against an RME ADI-2 DAC for feature depth. The one number that puts a size on the split is the ASR thread's own poll: of 266 voters, two thirds called it great and a quarter merely fine, with about seven per cent below that.
