Everyone measures roughly the same curve and reads it in opposite directions. On a perfect-seal flatbed rig corrected for perceived flatness it extends to 20 Hz and reads clean and tight; against Harman-style preference targets it reads bass-shy and wanting a shelf. Both are true statements about the same headphone. The tiebreaker is physical: the sub-bass depends on seal, and glasses or worn pads cost you the bottom octave.

For most of its life this was the least controversial thing about it — reviewers reached for words like 'superb' and 'unbeatable' at $170, and it was the standard answer to 'first serious open-back'. Two things complicate that now. It is discontinued, so the only price is a used one; and the HD 6XX and HD 600 it was measured against were always the counter-argument, and the HD 6XX is still on sale. One clearly dissenting voice rates it C-tier and not worth its price at all.
