Focal Solo6 ST6

Focal's analogue nearfield with the beryllium tweeter: praised everywhere for detail, stage and bass, measured low in distortion — and heard as silky by most, a little hot by some.

Focal Solo6 ST6

The short version

What to know.

A ported two-way whose measurements show a broadly flat on-axis response with a bass lift near 60 Hz, a −6 dB point of about 41–42 Hz, very low distortion, very low self-noise and wide horizontal dispersion, with extra off-axis energy between roughly 3 and 8 kHz. Sources agree on high detail, a wide and deep stage with a stable centre, full and punchy bass for the size, enough clean level for nearfield work, a solidly built cabinet, and strong value at around $3,000 a pair. They split on the treble (smooth and fatigue-free vs bright or hard in some rooms, which room correction, the rear high shelf or a wider listening triangle often settle), on the lower mids (clear vs a dip some hear next to Neumanns), and on reliability: the press praises the build, while two owners report blown fuses or a dead unit. Practical gripes recur: no input level control beyond a sensitivity switch, no footswitch in the box, and a Focus mode some find more useful than others.

About this product

The second-generation Solo6, launched in June 2022 as part of Focal's ST6 studio line: a 6.5-inch "W" composite woofer, Focal's beryllium inverted-dome tweeter in a recessed baffle, a front port, analogue amplification and filters, an XLR input and a footswitchable single-driver Focus mode. It launched with red-stained ash side panels; since late 2024 Focal sells it in black ("Solo6 Black ST6") with the same published specifications. Not the earlier Solo6 Be, the 2.5-way Twin6 or the 3-way Trio6. Sold one cabinet at a time; a pair costs about $2,998 in the US as of October 2026.

Focal's Solo6 is the compact two-way of the French company's top studio range, the monitor many engineers picture when they think of Focal: a 6.5-inch woofer under a beryllium inverted-dome tweeter, built in Saint-Étienne. The ST6 version that replaced the long-running Solo6 Be in 2022 has a heavier, thicker cabinet, a new woofer, a recessed baffle around the tweeter for wider dispersion, room-matching filters and a Focus mode that turns it into a single-driver check speaker at the press of a footswitch. There is no DSP and no digital input; everything is analogue.

At about $3,000 a pair it competes with Neumann's KH 120 II and KH 150, Genelec's 8330A and ADAM's A7V. Reviewers have been close to unanimous in its favour; the arguments are about its top end in real rooms, its lower midrange, and a few owners' reliability reports.

A good fit for

  • Mixers who want a revealing, detailed nearfield with a wide stage and a stable centre
  • Small and medium rooms where a 6.5-inch two-way can work without a sub
  • Immersive and multi-speaker rigs — the wall and ceiling inserts and price make it a common surround choice
  • Studios that want analogue monitors with no DSP or software to manage

Think twice if

  • Your room is untreated and you won't use room correction or the high shelf — some hear it bright there
  • You make sub-heavy electronic music and won't add a subwoofer
  • You want DSP room calibration, digital inputs or a level knob on the speaker
  • You need high levels at a distance — it plays clean, but not very loud

Common ground7

  • High detail that exposes reverb tails, compression and small flaws
  • A stable, precise image with a solid centre over a wide listening area
  • Full, punchy bass reaching about 41–42 Hz (−6 dB) — enough for most nearfield work, with a sub advised for sub-heavy genres

Points of contention5

  • Treble: smooth and fatigue-free vs bright or hard in some rooms — off-axis energy at 3–8 kHz, room correction and listening distance explain much of it
  • Lower mids: clear and present vs a dip that makes vocals sit back next to Neumanns
  • Soundstage: wide and deep for most, narrower than Genelec or Neumann reference monitors for two comparisons

Mostly heard as honest and well balanced. Sound & Recording measured an even response, and SOS, Tape Op, MusicRadar, MusicTech, Amazona and a Thomann owner call it neutral or uncoloured; Recording and SOS hear it as slightly forward, which SOS puts down to its detail. ASR's anechoic data shows a peak near 60 Hz and extra off-axis energy from 3 to 8 kHz that raise the predicted in-room response. A minority hear colour: Audiofanzine finds it dense in the mids and a little flattering next to Genelec 1030As, while an ASR critic and two owners trialling it against Neumanns hear it forward and scooped.

“They are neither overly flattering nor clinical – walking that line of truth perfectly.”

Tape Op #152

“While the response is broadly flat a peak around 60 Hz stands out.”

Amir Majidimehr, Audio Science Review (Klippel NFS)

“Dans notre ressenti, l’écoute sur des Solo6 est très agréable, voire peut-être un peu flatteuse.”

Audiofanzine (Studios Mégaphone, vs Genelec 1030A) ("To our ears, listening on the Solo6 is very pleasant, perhaps even a little flattering")

Measured

ASR (Klippel NFS): broadly flat on axis with a peak around 60 Hz; extra off-axis energy from about 3 to 8 kHz lifts the predicted in-room response there. spinorama.org scores the ASR data 5.3 (7.3 with an ideal subwoofer). Sound & Recording (anechoic): 5.9 dB ripple from 100 Hz to 10 kHz with an even overall trend.

Focal's own pages disagree on two figures: the product page lists a 1-inch tweeter and a 110 dB peak SPL at 1 m, while the Product Sheet lists a 1.5-inch (38 mm) tweeter and gives 110 dB as a CEA-2034 average from 50 Hz to 10 kHz in free field at 1 m. Filters: low shelf ±3 dB at 250 Hz, high shelf ±3 dB at 4.5 kHz, a ±3 dB bell at 160 Hz for desk or console reflections, and a 45/60/90 Hz high-pass. Focus mode, switched by a footswitch, turns off the tweeter and runs the woofer alone from 110 Hz to 10 kHz. Manufacturer-published figures, not measurements · from focal.com, dam.focal-naim.com. What to keep in mind 5

  1. A read of where the reviews and measurements stand as of October 2026. Most reviews date from 2022 and 2023, and DSP monitors around the same price keep moving the comparison.

  2. Speakers depend on the room more than anything else. Whether the treble reads as smooth or bright, and how full the lower mids sound, changes with the room, the desk and the listening distance, so the claims here name the setup they came from where the source gave one.
