One camp (both lab benches, Audiophile Heaven, Pragmatic Audio, Currawong and the measurement-minded forums) reports a neutral, transparent device whose distortion sits far below hearing. The other (Headfonics, Headfonia, audioreviews.org, eCoustics, Soundnews and most owner impressions on Head-Fi and Reddit) hears a consistent character next to ESS-chipped rivals such as the K19: warmer, denser, smoother, with a more relaxed top end. As with FiiO's K9 AKM, both camps agree on the direction of the claimed difference; they disagree on whether it exists.

Hi-Fi News' Audio Precision bench: THD 0.00009–0.0003% (20 Hz–20 kHz) over the top 30 dB of the range, 118 dB A-weighted S/N from every digital input, low-level linearity within ±0.1 dB across 115 dB, jitter under 25 ps, and a headphone-output response flat to ±0.03 dB from 20 Hz to 100 kHz; the only measured tonal lever is the filter menu, where the Slow and Mini Slow types roll off 8.3 dB by 20 kHz. Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity measured THD of 0.00029% and IMD of 0.00045% at the line output with an effective 19.1 bits, and noted the residual is dominated by the third harmonic. FiiO's own AP data, reproduced by Pragmatic Audio, put headphone-output SINAD at about 105–106 dB.
⚠ vs. listeners — Nothing in either bench distinguishes the K17 tonally from a clean ESS design, yet reviewers who compared it to the K19 side by side describe the same directional difference every time. The most instructive evidence again comes from believers: a Head-Fi owner who A/B'd a K9 Pro AKM against the K17 through the same external amplifier reported 'I could notice no difference while listening to tracks or movies,' and was told that 'Hearing a difference between the K9 Pro AKM and the K17 as DAC only should be incredibly difficult.' On Reddit, the HE1000se-synergy post crediting the K17's amp with 'a touch of warmth and intimacy' drew the reply 'they don’t make a difference, measurably. but, it’s possible you hear one, because the human brain works in very weird ways.' Secrets' bench offers one physical hook that cuts the other way: its author reads the third-harmonic-dominant residual as giving the sound 'a bit of an edge,' the opposite of warmth. No blind test settles it.

Broad agreement that it drives almost everything, with a named boundary rather than a dispute. HD 800 S, HE1000 Stealth and Unveiled, Arya, Utopia, Modhouse Tungsten and HE6se V2 all come up as comfortably driven from the 4 W balanced output, and five gain steps leave headroom to spare. The exception is consistent across every source that raises it: an original Susvara, or an HE6se pushed hard, is where a dedicated amplifier still pulls ahead — Audiophile Heaven names the Susvara as the one headphone it cannot drive, Currawong finds the drive good but short of a Mjolnir, and one owner describes his HE6se V2 as sounding 'behind a curtain' next to a 10 W Class A amp. Hi-Fi News adds that the protection clamps hard at the limit.

Hi-Fi News measured the 6.35 mm output at 1,860 mW into 32 Ω in the Super High and Ultra High gain modes (27/106/210 mW in Low/Medium/High), 130 mW into 600 Ω from an 8.8 V maximum, and 910 mW into 8 Ω before over-current protection intervenes, from a 1.5 Ω source impedance. FiiO rates the balanced 4.4 mm/XLR output at 4,000 mW + 4,000 mW into 32 Ω and 950 mW + 950 mW into 300 Ω in Ultra High gain, and the single-ended jack at 1,850 mW/32 Ω and 240 mW/300 Ω — so the 4 W headline is balanced-only and the lab's single-ended figure agrees with the spec. FiiO's stated 'adaptive impedance' range is 8–150 Ω single-ended and 8–350 Ω balanced.
Near-universal praise for a silent background: forum owners report no hiss from the 4.4 mm output even at Ultra High gain with the volume at 100, reviewers on sensitive IEMs hear nothing, and Hi-Fi News measures a wide 101 dB A-weighted S/N from the headphone jack. Two footnotes keep it short of unanimous. Audiophile Heaven, alone, hears a faint floor with ultra-sensitive IEMs on the top gain settings (cured by dropping to Medium or Low), and FiiO's May 2025 firmware fixed a bug in which the unit could develop output noise after long sessions in local-playback or streaming mode.

Volume is a digital attenuator with over 100 steps rather than a potentiometer, so there is no low-level channel imbalance. Firmware V199 (2025-05-23): 'Fixed the issue where there a probability of output noise issue after playing in local playback or streaming mode for long time'.

Ergonomics

The hardware — clicky selector switches, two press-able knobs, a bright 3.93-inch touchscreen and a real remote — draws some of the warmest language in the set; Headfonics calls the UX friendlier than the K19's. The software is the other story. Launch units shipped with a clock fixed to Beijing time, a VU meter that worked in two modes at a choppy frame rate, no app support, Wi-Fi that rejected passwords with special characters, freezes that needed the rear power switch, and a bug that silently pushed a low-gain headphone output to high after a trip through pre-amp mode. Nine firmware releases through August 2026 fixed most of it, and later reviewers say so — but the gain-jump report resurfaced on v265 in September 2026, the streamer and USB input vanish from the network or the computer whenever another input is selected, and the display is too small to read a volume level from the sofa.

Consistently praised — an all-aluminium chassis just under 3 kg with a linear toroidal supply inside, gold-plated Neutrik sockets, physically separated boards and a matte finish (FiiO replaced the early, too-shiny silver panel, according to Currawong). Headfonia notes it flexes fractionally more than the die-cast K19 and Headfonics that it is folded sheet metal rather than a casting; neither calls that a concern. The one real disagreement is heat: Headfonia found it running cooler than a Hugo 2, while Audiophile Heaven lists 'It gets quite hot during usage' as a con and a Head-Fi owner clocking 18 W at the wall with the headphone amp active calls it hot — the vents on all four sides and underneath want clearance. No pattern of hardware failure emerged from a 1,300-post owner thread; the intermittent shut-downs one owner reported to FiiO's forum read as firmware.

Sources split, and the fault line is what you think you are buying. The editorial and video consensus — Hi-Fi News, Secrets, Headfonia's Recommended Buy, Passion for Sound, Audiophile Heaven — is that one box doing DAC, 4 W amplifier, pre-amp, Roon endpoint and 31-band PEQ for under $1,000 is a bargain, and several call it the best thing FiiO has made. The measurement-minded reply, loudest on r/oratory1990 and ASR, is that the sound is already available from a far cheaper transparent box and that the K17 is worth it only if you will use the features. Two practical pressures sit under that: the US price rose from $899 at launch to $989.99 within months, and FiiO's own K15 is widely described as most of the experience for less.
