The bench says it is transparent. A stubborn minority of listeners says that is exactly the problem.

The 2017 second-generation Hugo — above the Mojo 2 and below the Hugo TT 2 and DAVE in Chord's range. Not the original 2014 Hugo, not the mains-powered desktop Hugo TT or TT 2, and not the Hugo M Scaler, which is an upsampler rather than a converter. Sold in natural silver and satin black; the two are identical apart from the finish.

Chord Electronics does not buy DAC chips. Since the late 1990s the Kent company has coded its own conversion onto field-programmable gate arrays, and the number it puts on the box is the filter's tap length — how many computations each upsampled sample passes through. The 2014 Hugo made that argument portable. The Hugo 2, launched in 2017, roughly doubled the taps to 49,152, added four selectable filters, a crossfeed circuit and a remote control, and raised the price by about half.

It landed as one of the most decorated products in its class — a What Hi-Fi? Best DAC winner every year from 2017 to 2022 — and simultaneously as the object the measurement community points at when it wants to argue about what expensive digital audio is for. Both reactions are still live, and they are not really about the same question.

The overview

A battery-powered DAC and headphone amp built on Chord's own FPGA conversion rather than an off-the-shelf converter chip. The instrumented facts are settled and favourable: distortion and jitter are at the low end of anything measured in a portable, output impedance is low enough not to alter a headphone's response, and 825 mW into 25 ohms is real power for a device this size — strong on high-impedance dynamics, short of a desktop amp on the hardest planars. What sources genuinely split on is everything downstream of that. Most reviewers hear a neutral, unusually resolving presentation; a consistent minority hears the same neutrality as lean, sharp or sterile, and reaches for the two filters that roll the treble off. The colour-coded sphere interface divides reviewers by whether they are comparing it to the original Hugo or to ordinary product design. The chassis is admired and the two micro-USB sockets are not. And the price is the single most argued point in every source class.

Genuinely powerful for a battery device and the most broadly agreed point in the record. It drives high-impedance dynamics without strain and has headroom to spare on efficient loads; the honest ceiling is the hardest planars, where a desktop amp still swings more.

A sub-1ohm output impedance is key to the Hugo 2 being able to drive low, variable impedance headphones/earbuds without further modification of the overall frequency response.

Paul Miller measured 825 mW into 25 ohms at the highest unclipped volume step, against Chord's published 740 mW into 32 ohms, 94 mW into 300 ohms and 1050 mW into 8 ohms. Maximum output is 4.58 V line out; the unit will swing past 5.2 V but clips there. There is no separate amplifier stage — Chord drives the headphone jacks straight from the converter's Class A output.

⚠ vs. listeners — Three labs give three output impedances: Chord publishes 0.025 ohm, Miller reports sub-1 ohm, and Amir Majidimehr measured 1.7 ohm in 2018, appending a note that his figure would read high if the unit clipped under his 33 ohm load. The spread does not change the buying decision — every figure is low enough to leave a headphone's frequency response alone — but it is a reminder that a single published impedance number is rarely reproduced exactly.

Noise

Very quiet, with one honest caveat. Line-level noise measures at the top of the class; at the headphone output the figure is nearer average for a portable, and listeners on hyper-sensitive in-ears report a faint but audible floor rather than true black. Feeding it over USB from a computer can also inject noise the optical input does not.

Noise too is fabulously low and contributes to another standard-setting figure for S/N of 104dB (re. 10mW/25ohm).

A-weighted signal-to-noise is 116.1 dB relative to full line-level output and 104 dB referenced to 10 mW into 25 ohms; Chord publishes 2.6 uV A-weighted noise and a 126 dB SNR. Jitter is 5-8 psec over the isolated inputs. Amir Majidimehr's 50 mV headphone-output test placed it around the middle of his portable chart, and his 2022 bench initially picked up computer noise over the USB input that vanished on Toslink.

⚠ vs. listeners — The two labs are testing different things, not contradicting each other: the class-leading figure is line level, the average one is the headphone output at low listening levels. Both are true, and which you meet depends on whether you plug in a 12-ohm in-ear or a 300-ohm headphone.

Sources split, and the split is unusually stable across nine years of reviews. One camp hears a neutral, exceptionally resolving converter with no character of its own; the other hears that same neutrality as lean, sharp and emotionally flat. The bench sides with neither — it simply reports that there is very little there to hear.

Measured

Distortion under headphone load runs 0.00006-0.0009% from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at -10 dBFS, rising to 0.005% through bass and midrange and 0.011% at 20 kHz into 25 ohms. Amir Majidimehr's 2018 bench found "no obvious design/execution problems" and his 2022 bench called the portable performance superb — while noting that the 49,152-tap filter bought no measurable advantage over an Exasound E32 or a Topping DX7.

⚠ vs. listeners — If the box measures essentially transparent, a reproducible complaint about its tonal balance ought not to exist — yet it does, in every source class. Two things anchor it. Chord itself ships two of its four filters purely to roll the treble off, which is an admission that some listeners will want the top trimmed; Miller measured that roll-off at -0.85 dB at 20 kHz, Majidimehr at about 1 dB. And the loudest praise comes from reviewers who also reach for it: Headfonia's Lieven Vranken says he keeps going back to the high-frequency roll-off setting with almost every headphone he uses. The likeliest reading is that the disagreement is about how a genuinely uncoloured source interacts with already-bright headphones, not about a flaw in the converter.

Deep and flexible for a portable — four digital inputs plus aptX Bluetooth, both headphone jack sizes, RCA line out with a fixed 3 V mode, four filters, three crossfeed levels and a full remote. The recurring complaints are structural rather than sonic: two micro-USB ports in a device this expensive, no balanced output, and a filter set several owners say they cannot hear.

Hugo 2 features all the inputs and outputs you could realistically require.

USB carries PCM to 768 kHz/32-bit and DSD512; coaxial over a 3.5 mm jack reaches 384 kHz, or 768 kHz in dual-data mode with an M Scaler; Chord's current specification caps optical at 96 kHz. Bluetooth is aptX only, not aptX HD. The filters do measure, but only just: -0.85 dB at 20 kHz for the two roll-off settings against a flat response for the default.

Editorial reviewers who weigh it against other four-figure converters call it class-leading; the measurement community weighs it against what its performance costs elsewhere and calls the premium indefensible. Owners sit awkwardly in between — they rate it four and five stars and still name the price as its main flaw.
