Cayin RU7

A dongle voiced like a choice, drawing about twice the current its spec sheet promises.

The 1-bit successor to Cayin's R2R RU6, not a revision of it — the two dongles share a form factor and almost nothing else. Where the RU6 converts with a resistor-ladder R2R network and offers a non-oversampling mode, the RU7 uses a discrete 1-bit DSD converter built from 128 (4 × 32) thin-film resistors, the same principle Cayin shipped in the $1,700 N7 player, and converts everything it is fed to DSD first: an All-to-DSD engine upsamples incoming PCM to DSD64, DSD128 or DSD256 before conversion, selectable in the menu. It adds a genuine shared line-out mode on both jacks and roughly doubles the RU6's balanced output power. It is a bus-powered dongle with no battery of its own: one USB-C input, 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm outputs, a 0.91-inch OLED, two gain settings and a 100-step relay-switched volume array. Not the newer RU9, not the RU6, and not the N7 DAP it is derived from.

Cayin spent 2021 proving that a resistor-ladder DAC could be shrunk into a dongle, and 2023 proving it could be done again with a different conversion scheme entirely. The RU7 is the second attempt: 128 precision thin-film resistors wired as a discrete 1-bit converter, an engine that turns every incoming PCM stream into DSD before it reaches them, and a balanced amplifier stage that puts 400 milliwatts into 32 ohms from something that weighs 25 grams and has no battery of its own.

It arrived into a category that had mostly stopped being interesting — dongles built on the same handful of off-the-shelf chips, sounding much the same as each other — and it is reviewed almost entirely by people who listen rather than measure. That shapes the evidence: there is exactly one independent bench of this DAC anywhere, and it is a hobbyist's, posted mid-thread. What there is instead is a large, unusually specific pile of listening notes, and two reviewers who independently put a multimeter on the USB port and got the same surprising answer.

The overview

A $289 bus-powered USB-C dongle built around a discrete 1-bit DSD converter made from 128 thin-film resistors, with 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm outputs rated at 160 mW and 400 mW into 32 Ω, a shared fixed-level line-out mode on both jacks, a 100-step relay volume array, an OLED screen and a selectable All-to-DSD engine. Two things are close to unanimous. The first is that it is quiet: reviewers who needed an impedance adapter to silence sensitive monitors on the R2R RU6 describe a black background here at high gain, and the one independent bench places it near the top of a large dongle collection. The second is the line out — no rival in its class offers a true fixed-level output on both jacks, and it is the feature owners single out most often. Power is generous for the format and not in doubt for in-ears; how far up the headphone ladder it reaches is a gradient sources place differently, and the ceiling is often the host phone's current budget rather than the amplifier. Two things are genuinely argued. Reviewers cannot agree whether the RU7 has a voice at all — most describe a rich, slightly warm, analogue-leaning character; a minority insist it is flat and that anyone expecting RU6 warmth will not find it. And they split on whether the heat and battery drain matter: the dongle draws roughly double the current Cayin publishes, by two independent measurements that agree with each other, and gets warm enough that some reviewers notice it in a pocket while others call it a non-issue.

Exceptional for the format and not in dispute for in-ears — 400 mW balanced into 32 Ω is roughly double what most dongles of its size manage, and low output impedance keeps sensitive monitors clean on high gain. Where sources differ is how far up the full-size ladder that reaches: two reviewers reach opposite verdicts on the same Sennheiser HD 660S2, and several owners report the practical ceiling being set by what the host phone will supply rather than by the amplifier.

Cayin rates the RU7 at 160 mW into 32 Ω from the 3.5 mm output and 400 mW from the 4.4 mm, with output impedance of 0.5 Ω single-ended and 1 Ω balanced; the shared line-out mode is fixed at 1.2 Vrms and 2.4 Vrms. Published THD+N is 0.006% (3.5 mm) and 0.008% (4.4 mm) into 32 Ω. Because the dongle has no battery, the real limit is often the host: ecoustics traced dropouts to an iPhone's Lightning port supplying 4.2 V at 400 mA, and twister6 reproduced the same stuttering on iPhone at DSD256, which cleared at DSD128.

The strongest agreement in the whole set, and pointed, because the R2R RU6 it replaces was widely reported to hiss with sensitive in-ears. Reviewers who had to drop to low gain or fit an impedance adapter on the older dongle describe a genuinely black background on the RU7 at high gain, across monitors as sensitive as the Campfire Solaris and Empire Ears Odin.

I’m yet to hit any significant noise floor with any of my IEMs, even when turned up loud, and even with super sensitive IEMs where noise would sometimes be an issue.

The only independent bench — an RMAA run through an E1DA Cosmos ADC into a 32 Ω dummy load — places the RU7 well ahead of the RU6 and in the front rank of a large dongle collection, though behind the Luxury & Precision W2 and W4. Cayin's own published signal-to-noise figures are 114 dB from the 3.5 mm output and 112 dB from the 4.4 mm, i.e. 2 dB worse on the balanced side — an asymmetry one forum reader noticed in the spec sheet, and the only noise claim in the set that is not positive.

Sources split on the most basic question there is: does this DAC have a sound? The large majority hear a deliberate character — rich, slightly warm of neutral, with an analogue-leaning timbre they describe in almost identical language across a dozen unconnected reviews. A minority say the opposite, that the RU7 is flat and that anyone shopping for the older R2R dongle's warmth will not find it here. A second argument runs underneath: the All-to-DSD setting audibly changes the balance, and reviewers disagree on which way it should go — some treat higher rates as strictly better, while the one person who measured the thing prefers DSD64 and hears DSD256 as flatter through the midrange.

One independent measurement exists: an RMAA sweep through an E1DA Cosmos ADC at a 32 Ω dummy load, reported as "pretty good" and clearly ahead of the RU6, but short of the Luxury & Precision W2 and W4. No calibrated Audio Precision bench of the RU7 has ever been published, and Audio Science Review — the usual home of that work — has never reviewed it.

⚠ vs. listeners — The one bench that exists says the RU7 is clean but not class-leading, while most listening reports describe a distinct character that no published number isolates. Two things keep the tension honest rather than resolvable. The measurer volunteered that RMAA results are not calibrated the way an Audio Precision sweep is and therefore do not cross-compare between testers, so the number cannot settle the question. And the character sources describe shifts with the All-to-DSD setting, which the published specifications do not vary by at all — meaning the same unit measures identically in modes that reviewers agree sound different.

The line out is the RU7's real differentiator and every source says so: both jacks switch to a fixed-level output that bypasses the volume stage, which no rival dongle in its class offered. Add three All-to-DSD rates, two gain settings, an OLED that reports sample rate and mode, and a 100-step relay-switched volume array, and the feature set is unusually deep for the format. The standing complaints are small and consistent: the Lightning cable is a $20 extra, and line-out mode has to be switched back by hand.

The one aspect where the centre of opinion is negative, and the one sources actually argue about. Everyone agrees the RU7 runs warm and draws hard on the host; they disagree on whether that is a drawback or a fact of the format. One camp reports a dongle that is uncomfortable in a pocket after half an hour and visibly eats a phone battery, with playback stuttering on iPhones and some Android handsets at the highest DSD setting. The other calls it warm but unremarkable and reports no problems in use. Separately and less contentiously: the relay volume array clicks and briefly mutes when it crosses a segment boundary, and the buttons sit flush enough to be hard to find by feel.

Measured

Cayin's product page states the redesigned amplifier "maintains the overall power drain at 100-110mA". Two independent measurements roughly double that and agree closely with each other despite different loads and methods: twister6 recorded 170 mA at DSD64, 190 mA at DSD128 and 230 mA at DSD256, with 50 mA at idle; ICHOS measured 0.18 A, 0.20 A and 0.23 A playing into a 150 Ω iBasso SR3 at fixed volume, against 0.12 A for a FiiO KA5 and 0.14 A for an iFi Go bar under the same conditions.

⚠ vs. listeners — The maker markets low power consumption as a design benefit; the only two people who put a meter on it measured roughly twice the published figure, and both then measured cheaper rivals drawing a third less. Cayin does not dispute the heat that follows — asked directly on Head-Fi why the RU7 runs warmer than the RU6, the company's own representative attributed it to the parallel dual amplifier and to All-to-DSD being done in hardware rather than software. So the disagreement is not about what the dongle does; it is about whether a warm pocket and a faster-draining phone are a price worth paying.

A machined aluminium body with a glass front panel, 25 grams, with a magnetic leather case in the box that reviewers like more than they expected to. Fit and finish draw consistent praise. Two isolated failures are on record and neither has a matching pattern in the community thread: a reviewer whose first unit arrived with a visibly tilted screen and whose two units both had a 3.5 mm jack that rattles, and a verified buyer who photographed white residue leaking from inside the chassis.

At 24.1 grams the RU7 is extremely light but feels very well-finished

Every editorial source in the set treats $289 as a strong price for what the RU7 does, several rating it the best dongle they had heard at the time and one buying the review unit. The dissent comes from buyers rather than reviewers: a handful of owners call it expensive for the gain over cheaper dongles, and one reports hearing distortion in the PCM-to-DSD conversion that he felt the press had missed. It is a consensus with outliers rather than a split, but the outliers are worth reading before spending.
