ZMF Auteur Classic

ZMF's “HD 600 with real bass” — near-unanimously called the most neutral ZMF, and argued over mainly at 2 kHz and 5–7 kHz, which is exactly where the measurements have a hole and a spike.

ZMF Auteur Classic

The short version

What to know.

An open-back, 300-ohm dynamic headphone with a biocellulose driver and solid-wood cups, sold direct by ZMF for $1,499.99. Sources broadly agree it is the most neutral-sounding headphone in ZMF's range — repeatedly described as the HD 600 of the lineup with deeper bass — and six independent measurement rigs back that up: against an HD 600 on the same rig it carries several dB more sub-bass with similar mid-bass, a dip centred near 2 kHz, a peak around 5.5 kHz and a notch near 7 kHz. Sub-bass extension, build quality and dynamics draw broad praise; resolution is consistently placed as good but a step below ZMF's Atrium and Vérité. Opinion splits on the treble (smooth and grain-free to some, edgy or fatiguing on the wrong amp or DAC to others, short of sparkle to a few), on whether the mids sound forward or set back, on soundstage size, and on whether it is the ZMF to buy or a reason to save for the Atrium. It weighs about 490 g, and most — not all — find the headband carries that well.

About this product

The Auteur Classic, released July 2022 — the revamp of ZMF's first open-back, the original Auteur of 2017, which was discontinued when its driver stock ran out. The Classic keeps the 300-ohm biocellulose recipe but adds a new driver, new driver placement, the Atrium Damping System and a revised grille; ZMF also upgraded original Auteurs to Classic spec ($400 for first owners, $600 secondhand). Reviews of the original Auteur describe a different, more laid-back headphone and are not mixed in here. Wood, chassis and pads are configurable.

The Auteur was ZMF's first open-back, launched in 2017 as the linear, neutral-leaning member of a family known for warmth. In 2022 the original ran out of drivers and ZMF rebuilt it as the Auteur Classic: the same hand-finished wood cups and 300-ohm biocellulose concept, now with a new driver, the rear damping system from the Atrium, and a $1,499.99 price that undercut the original by $100. ZMF calls it the headphone it would recommend over all others to someone who has never owned one.

That is roughly how its listeners treat it too — as the entry point to the ZMF sound, and as the most common answer to “what comes after an HD 600 or HD 650?” Its coverage lives almost entirely with enthusiasts: a long loaner tour on Super Best Audio Friends, six independent measurement rigs, a Finnish reviewer who bought one, and a steady trickle of owners. They agree on a lot. Where they argue, the graphs usually show why.

A good fit for

  • HD 600 or HD 650 owners looking for the same broad balance with real sub-bass, more space and better build
  • First-time ZMF buyers who want the house build and warranty without the warmer ZMF voicings
  • Listeners to bass-heavy electronic, hip-hop and rock who want extension without a mid-bass hump
  • Owners of a good desktop amp or a tube amp, who can tune its top end through the chain and pads

Think twice if

  • You are sensitive to a 5–6 kHz edge and listen through a bright delta-sigma DAC or solid-state amp you won't change
  • You want intimate, front-row vocals in the HD 650 manner
  • You want flagship-level resolution and staging — the Atrium, Vérité and wider planars outdo it there
  • You already own an original Auteur and like it — owners who tried the Classic often kept the original
  • Heavy headphones bother you, or you need something portable — it is 300 ohms and wants a real amp

The reviewer consensus

Agreement &

4 / 11topics divide opinion
2 Strong agreement5 Mostly agree4 Divided opinions

Common ground7

  • It is the most neutral headphone in ZMF's lineup — closest to an HD 600's balance, with ZMF's wood-cup character on top.
  • Sub-bass extension is excellent and linear; the bass is clean rather than mid-bass-heavy, and is the biggest step up over the HD 6x0 family.
  • Resolution is good for the price but a step below ZMF's Atrium and Vérité — a ranking almost every comparison repeats.

Points of contention4

  • Treble: smooth and grain-free, or edgy around 5–6 kHz — with the edge reports tied heavily to the DAC, amp and pads — or simply short of sparkle.
  • Mids: present and slightly forward, or vocals set a step back — the same 2 kHz dip and 3 kHz rebound heard two ways.
  • Soundstage: spacious next to an HD 600/650, or merely moderate next to the Atrium and planars at the price.

The clearest point of agreement in the coverage: this is the neutral ZMF. Reviewers reach for the HD 600 again and again — the same broad balance, with more sub-bass and the wood-cup character on top — and several call it the most linear thing ZMF makes. A smaller group hears it as slightly V-shaped or “contrasty” rather than flat, usually when comparing it with the more midrange-heavy original Auteur or the Atrium; none of them call it coloured.

“Like the OG Autuer before, the Auteur Classic is the most "neutral" sounding of the ZMF lineup.”

Super Best Audio Friends (purr1n)

“With the Classic model, the Auteur continues to maintain its position as ZMF's so-called neutral headphone.”

Kuulokenurkka (Sword of Damocles)

“Tonally almost spot on for my preferences/HRTF stock!”

Measured

Six squig rigs, each diffed against an HD 600 on the same rig: broadly HD 600-shaped from 100 Hz to 1 kHz, with +1.5 to +5 dB more at 30 Hz, a dip centred near 2 kHz, a treble peak around 5.5 kHz and a notch near 7 kHz. Kuulokenurkka finds it more neutral than the Atrium against the Harman 2018 target.

What to keep in mind 6

  1. A read of where the reviews land as of October 2026. The Auteur Classic has been on sale since July 2022 at an unchanged price, and the field around it — including ZMF's own lineup — has moved since.

  2. This is the Auteur Classic. The original Auteur (2017–2022) shares the name and the look but sounds noticeably different; older reviews and many forum posts describe that one.
