Violectric DHA V226

The short version

What to know.

A $1,599 DAC, balanced headphone amp and preamp. Sources agree strongly on the amplifier: it drives everything from sensitive IEMs to the Susvara and HE6se without strain, stays quiet with IEMs once the pre-gain is turned down, and is built like a tank, with a volume knob reviewers call near perfect. Its sound is heard as neutral with a touch of warmth — never analytical — though some owners hear it as plainly warm and relaxed. The split is over the built-in DAC: about 61% of the weighted opinion, led by the press and the one lab test, finds it clean and transparent, while owners who compared it with outboard DACs call it the weak link that holds the amp back. Connectivity draws steady criticism — USB-C is the only digital input, the analogue inputs and line out are RCA only, there is no remote, and Windows needs care. No independent lab has measured the headphone amp itself.

About this product

The 2021 DAC, headphone amp and preamp in one box. Not the amp-only HPA V202 or HPA V222, which have no DAC.

Violectric is the hi-fi arm of Lake People, a pro-audio maker on Lake Constance, and the DHA V226 is its smallest mains-powered all-in-one: a balanced headphone amplifier with 4-pin XLR, 4.4 mm and quarter-inch outputs, a Cirrus Logic USB-C DAC, two RCA inputs and an RCA output that works as a fixed line out or a variable preamp. Gain is set with DIP switches on the back, in seven steps from -18 to +18 dB.

It arrived in late 2021 as the heir to the much-loved V200 and V281 amps, and reviewers have treated it that way — as a serious headphone amp first. The arguments are about the parts around the amp: whether the built-in DAC is good enough to make it a true one-box system, and whether a balanced amp should have only RCA inputs and a single USB-C digital input.

A good fit for

  • One desk amp for everything from sensitive IEMs to hard-to-drive planars
  • A compact hub that also feeds powered speakers or a power amp from its RCA preamp output
  • Listeners who want a natural, non-fatiguing amp rather than an analytical one

Think twice if

  • You need optical, coaxial or balanced inputs, or balanced line outputs
  • You already own a good DAC — the amp-only HPA V222 costs less
  • You want a remote or front-panel gain control
  • Your source is a Windows 11 PC and you can't test it first

Common ground5

  • Drives nearly any headphone, from sensitive IEMs to the Susvara and HE6se
  • Quiet with IEMs once the pre-gain is turned down
  • Built like a tank, with a near-perfect volume knob

Points of contention3

  • Built-in DAC: clean enough for a one-box system vs the weak link that holds the amp back
  • Amp voicing: neutral and clean vs warm, smooth and relaxed
  • Value: a strong all-in-one vs paying for a DAC you'll replace (the amp-only HPA V222 is the alternative)

Strong agreement that it has power for anything. Hi-Fi News, AVForums, Stereo Guide, Ichos and Audio Total call it effortless, and reviewers ran a Susvara, HE6se v2, HE1000, Focal Clear MG, HD 800 S and 600-ohm DT 880 from it, WaveTheory at the default 0 dB pre-gain. The reservations are at the very top: Hifi Pig calls its Susvara drive "very respectable" and Hi-Fi+ "respectable rather than exceptional", and a Head-Fi owner thinks the Susvara wants a stronger amp. The single-ended jack runs 6 dB below the balanced ones.

“it will make even demanding headphones play louder than they, or your ears, will be able to stand”

Andrew Everard · Hi-Fi News

“can drive with ease all the headphones on the market, including the Susvara”

Laskis Petros · Ichos Reviews

“Maybe good enough? But definitely not like a power amp.”

Empyah · Head-Fi (on the Susvara)

Measured

Violectric rates the balanced outputs at 3,500 mW into 100 ohms, 2,200 mW into 32 ohms, 1,500 mW into 16 ohms and 23.2 V into 300 and 600 ohms, both channels driven; the single-ended jack is 6 dB lower in level. Fixed amp gain is +2 dB single-ended and +8 dB balanced, ahead of the ±18 dB pre-gain. Hi-Fi News reports the rated output met in practice, but no independent bench of the headphone outputs has been published.

What to keep in mind 5

  1. A read of where the reviews landed as of October 2026. The V226 has been on sale since late 2021, and its price has risen from €1,399 to €1,599 along the way.

  2. No independent lab has measured the headphone amplifier itself; the power, noise and distortion figures here are Violectric's, and the one lab test covered the DAC and line output.
