Strong consensus · 6 srcThe A90 Discrete's defining strength, and unanimously so. Topping rates it at 9.8 W per channel into 16 Ω, 6.7 W into 32 Ω, 1 W into 300 Ω and 500 mW into 600 Ω from the balanced outputs, and Audio Science Review found the discrete output stage does something its bench had never seen before: no drop in output voltage at 32 Ω, with the sag only beginning around 20 Ω. Amir called it the first amp to have the upper hand over his Dan Clark Stealth; Future Audiophile hit loud levels on the same headphone at 55 of 99; the teardown author drove 600-ohm DT 880s hard on low gain. Two gain settings and the relay volume make the same amp usable with sensitive IEMs. The one caveat comes from the most demanding reviewer: Soundnews still won't recommend a Susvara or Abyss on either A90, however much denser this one sounds with them.

ASR measured power into 300, 50 and 32 Ω with balanced in and out and found the THD-vs-power curves at 32 Ω unaffected by the load — 'It is not until we get to 20 ohm that the output voltage starts to drop a bit' — which it noted was a first for that test. Pushed into protection below 32 Ω the unit shut off and recovered cleanly. Unbalanced output is a quarter of the balanced power. Strong consensus · 9 srcSilent, and nobody disputes it. Future Audiophile ran a 119 dB-sensitivity Empire Ears Zeus at maximum volume on high gain and heard nothing; Soundnews and the teardown author say the same of every IEM they tried. The relay-stepped volume control is the other half of the story: ASR measured channel matching that stays perfect past the limits of hearing at low volumes, which is exactly where cheap pots fail. The DAC side is equally clean — ASR called its dynamic range exceptional, and a Head-Fi owner reports zero output noise on a speaker system. The only asterisks are mechanical rather than electrical: the relays themselves tick audibly when the volume is changed quickly, ASR measured the discrete amp's noise floor a hair behind the op-amp A90 on the 50 mV test, and Soundnews warns the 6.35 mm jack can pop when sensitive IEMs are plugged in.

ASR: A90 Discrete SINAD 119 dB balanced-in to balanced-out, with dynamic range slightly below the op-amp A90 and a corresponding penalty on the 50 mV quiet-amp test; channel balance stays matched below audible thresholds across the relay range. Topping's manual puts the amp's noise floor between 0.2 and 1.8 µV depending on gain and output. D90 III Sabre: ASR found exceptional dynamic range at 4 V output; Topping specifies 135 dB A-weighted SNR balanced, 1.1 µV noise and 0.3 dB channel balance. The teardown measured 0 mV DC offset on the 4-pin XLR output of a second-hand unit.
Transparency
Contested · 13 srcThe contested axis, split almost exactly down the middle by weight. Every source accepts that the stack measures transparent — the DAC in a virtual tie for the top of ASR's chart, the amp at 119 dB SINAD — and one camp says that is the whole story: Future Audiophile could not reliably hear the preamp in a bypass test, TechPowerUp finds no signature versus other clean amps, and the measurement forum's own regulars call any difference from a $200 box inaudible. The other camp, just as large and including two veteran hi-fi magazine critics, describes a character. On the DAC it runs one way: StereoNET hears a slightly 'well-lit', incisive tonality that turns 'sterile' against costlier references, Headfonics finds the bass quite lean, and Future Audiophile's editor heard the highs as a little thin next to $1,900–$6,000 DACs. On the amp it runs the other: Soundnews calls it richer and warmer than any previous Topping, while iiWi calls it strident. Notably, most of camp B still likes the result — they are describing, not condemning — and no bench on either side shows a tilt.
Measured
ASR measured the D90 III Sabre as the best-performing Topping DAC it had tested, in a virtual tie with the previous SINAD chart leader, with perfect linearity, excellent IMD and multitone, and jitter that 'could be a hair better'. The A90 Discrete measured 119 dB SINAD — a hair behind the op-amp A90 — with flat, extended frequency response and a slight THD rise at the top of the band. Future Audiophile's Steven Stone A/B'd and bypass-tested the preamp against a passive Tortuga and a Schiit Freya S in passive mode and could not identify a reliable difference.
⚠ vs. listeners — Nothing on either bench shows the tilt camp B describes — the DAC's response is flat and the amp's THD rise sits above the audible band. The 'well-lit' or 'lean' character is therefore either the sound of very low distortion described from a subjective vocabulary, or a comparison against costlier gear that is itself less neutral. The evidence supports 'transparent'; it cannot rule out that listeners consistently hear the same thing.

Its Bluetooth remote is the feature reviewers single out — it works around corners and through doors. The amp brings balanced and single-ended in and out, three headphone jacks (4-pin XLR, 4.4 mm, 6.35 mm), two gains, a ground-lift switch, an expansion port for Topping's EXT90 input box, two memory presets and firmware updates over USB-C. What draws criticism is what is missing at the price: the D90 III Sabre has no parametric EQ — and, according to owners who asked, Topping has said none is coming — while its own $200 D50 III has ten bands; the measurement forum's first reaction to the DAC was that at $899 it should. Beyond that, only one line-level input of each type on the amp without the EXT90, and no headphone output on the DAC.

In the plus column: the DAC's Bluetooth remote genuinely fixes the line-of-sight complaint of earlier Toppings, the amp's relay volume gives a repeatable two-digit level readout and remembers a level per input and output, and both boxes wake together over the trigger. Against it, the complaints are consistent and specific. The DAC's display is the same small monochrome panel as the D90SE — ASR wanted a proper high-resolution screen at this price, iiWi finds it odd the cheaper D70 line got a colour display first, StereoNET notes a decade-old Audiolab had a better one — and its setup menu cannot be reached from the front panel during playback, only by holding the button while flipping the rear power switch or via the remote. The amp has no real display at all, so gain changes and menu settings go through a press-and-twist gesture or the remote; the teardown author measured the amp remote's vertical pickup angle at about 20°; Soundnews found the 6.35 mm jack could reset the amp when headphones were unplugged; and the rear panel of the DAC is unlabelled. Both run warm rather than hot, though one owner asked whether an idle DAC should get that warm.

Sources split — not on the chassis, which everyone praises, but on whether the amp lasts. Every reviewer describes the same thing: thick CNC-machined aluminium on both boxes, matching finishes in black or silver, an internal IEC power supply with no wall wart, and a teardown that found Mean Well encapsulated supplies, a surge varistor, sealed amplifier modules and a factory-trimmed 0 mV DC offset. The only physical knocks are that the amp is light enough for stiff XLR cables to tip it, and that the DAC's rear panel is unlabelled. The other camp is the owner record. From the first month of sale through 2026, the ASR thread carries more than a dozen separate A90 Discrete owners reporting the same failure — loud pops or crackle, then a '-5' error, which Topping's own reply explains as the DC-protection circuit tripping — some within weeks, some at the two-year mark, with repair meaning a trip to China. Amazon's 30 ratings run 27% one-star. Editorial units, tested for weeks on loan, never show it; the split tracks time in service, not the metalwork.

The teardown measured 0 mV DC offset on a healthy second-hand unit, case temperatures under 35 °C after hours of use, and internal hot spots of 47–48 °C at the power supplies. ⚠ vs. listeners — Nothing about the build quality reviewers can see or measure predicts the failures; the teardown found textbook power and protection design. The failure reports cluster on the amp's DC-protection trip and are self-selected forum posts, so the true rate is unknown — but they span four years of production and two firmware generations, which argues against an early-batch-only explanation.

Rated a bargain by most of the editorial press and questioned by the measurement community that made Topping's name — a real split, and a bimodal one. Future Audiophile called the DAC a champion of value after running it against Bricasti and Benchmark, Positive Feedback called the amp an incredible bargain against a $1,899 PS Audio preamp, Soundnews gave the amp its Gold award, and StereoNET found no weak point at the price. The other camp's argument is not that the stack is bad but that the step up is inaudible: TechPowerUp — reviewing the amp against Topping's own cheaper lines — concluded a less expensive box gives the same experience, iiWi found the DAC better than the D70 Pro but nowhere near fifty percent better, and the ASR review thread's first pages are dominated by regulars asking who would pay $700 more than a transparent $200 DAC, or choose it over an RME with EQ and support. ASR's own reader poll gave the DAC its top rating from 65% of 444 voters — solid, but short of the 77% the amp drew and the 81% its own cheaper D50 III collected. One US dealer now lists the A90 Discrete as discontinued at $499.
