Novation FLkey 2 Mini

The short version

What to know.

A 25-mini-key MIDI controller made specifically for FL Studio, around $130, with 16 RGB velocity-sensitive pads (polyphonic aftertouch per the user guide), eight endless encoders, a small 128×64 OLED, pitch and mod touch strips, an arpeggiator and scale/chord modes, USB-C bus power, a 3.5mm TRS MIDI out and a sustain input. Sources agree it is hyper-portable, that the pads feel good for finger drumming, that the endless encoders and screen fix the first generation's biggest weaknesses, that the build is a step up from the Mk1, and that FL Studio integration needs no scripts and goes deeper than any rival. They split on four things. The keys: some call them adequate for the size, while the reviewers who compared rival mini keyboards call them shallow, mushy and worse than the competition's. Reliability of that integration: it is described as flawless, but owners hit a Record-button crash in FL Studio 26.1.2 (fixed in 26.1.3) and an unanswered Mac report of keys sending nothing in FL Studio 26. The bundle: six months of FL Studio Producer Edition plus twenty-odd plugins, but not a permanent DAW licence. And value: fair at $130, but several reviewers think going up to the 37 or 49 buys far more, and Novation says the hardware platform is shared with the cheaper Launchkey Mini MK4. Compared with the bigger FLkeys it lacks Undo/Redo, Metronome, Score Log and Loop buttons, the mini-jack MIDI out ships without an adapter, and the keys have no aftertouch.

About this product

The second-generation 25-mini-key FLkey (May 2026) — sold by Novation as "FLkey Mini 25" and by retailers as "FLkey 2 Mini 25". It adds an OLED screen, endless encoders, an arpeggiator and USB-C over the 2022 FLkey Mini, which Novation still sells as the previous generation. Not the FLkey 2 37, which has full-size keys, wheels, a 5-pin MIDI out and the full workflow button row.

Novation's FLkey line is the only keyboard range built with Image-Line for FL Studio alone, and the Mini has always been its gateway model. The second generation arrived in May 2026 with the upgrades owners of the 2022 Mini had asked for — endless encoders instead of fixed pots, an OLED screen, an arpeggiator, chord maps and USB-C — while keeping the same small footprint and the same price point.

What the Mini 2 keeps from its bigger siblings is the engine: the same sixteen pads, the same eight encoders, the same FL Studio scripts and creative tools. What it gives up is buttons, wheels and key size — and that trade, more than anything about FL Studio, is where reviewers part ways.

A good fit for

  • FL Studio producers who want the full pad, encoder and screen workflow on a laptop-sized controller
  • Beatmakers who live on the pads and the Channel Rack sequencer more than on the keys
  • Producers who work on the go and want one-cable, bus-powered setup

Think twice if

  • You play keys properly or are learning chords — 25 shallow mini keys is the compromise most reviewers flag
  • You want Undo, Metronome, Score Log or Loop buttons on the hardware — they start at the 37
  • You use more than one DAW: outside FL Studio it is a Mackie HUI surface, and Novation itself points multi-DAW users to the Launchkey
  • You already own FL Studio and were counting on the bundle — the six-month licence won't activate on a machine with a prior licence

Common ground5

  • Hyper-portable and bus-powered — the FLkey for laptops, small desks and travel
  • Same sixteen pads as the bigger FLkeys and Launchkey MK4, and they feel good for finger drumming
  • Endless encoders and the OLED screen fix the first-generation Mini's biggest complaints

Points of contention4

  • Keys: adequate for the size, or shallow and mushy next to rival mini keyboards
  • Integration: flawless in reviews, but owners hit a Record-button crash (fixed in FL Studio 26.1.3) and an unresolved Mac failure
  • Bundle: generous for $130, or just a six-month FL Studio trial rather than a DAW you keep

Nobody disputes the depth: FL Studio detects the Mini, the pads drive the Channel Rack, step sequencer and Patterns, the encoders map to plugins, the Mixer, Mixer Inserts and Channel Mixer, and reviewers call it the best FL Studio control at any size. The split is about how dependable it has been. In July 2026 owners on the Image-Line forum and r/FL_Studio reported FL Studio crashing when the FLkey 2 Mini's Record button was pressed; Novation's support staff traced it to an FL Studio build and pointed to the 26.1.3 fix. A separate Mac report — the Mini detected but sending no notes in FL Studio 26, with its Shift functions gone — had no public answer, and a second owner reported the same problem in September. Outside FL Studio it is a Mackie HUI surface, which reviewers describe as workable but not the reason to buy it.

Measured

Integration runs through FL Studio scripts maintained by Novation and Image-Line, plus Mackie HUI for other DAWs (the user guide walks through Reaper, Studio One and others) and NKS for Native Instruments and NKS-ready plugins. The minimum FL Studio version is stated three different ways: Novation's product page says 26.1.1 or later, its support FAQ says 21.0.3 or above, and Image-Line says FL Studio 2025 or later. It is not supported on FL Studio Web.

vs. listeners — The Record-button crash was a host regression rather than the controller: Novation's support staff replied on r/FL_Studio that it was an FL Studio build issue resolved in 26.1.3, so that criticism is dated. The Mac report has no documented fix, and the update-and-reconnect friction one Amazon owner describes points the same way — this controller's whole value rides on FL Studio's release train.

What to keep in mind 6

  1. This is a read of where opinion lands as of October 2026, about five months after launch — early for durability, QC patterns or long-term firmware behaviour to show up either way.

  2. Most hands-on reviews tested the Mini alongside a bigger FLkey 2. The pads, encoders, screen and creative tools are shared across the range, so those impressions carry over; anything about semi-weighted keys, faders or keyboard zones belongs to the 49 and 61, not this model.
