The open-back NDH 30 (cat. 509111), Neumann's second headphone — not the closed-back NDH 20 it is physically almost identical to, which costs about $100 less, runs 150 Ω instead of 120 Ω, and is voiced differently (notably a 2 kHz dip the NDH 30 removes). A Black Edition of the NDH 30 exists and is the same headphone in a different colourway, sold at the same price.

Neumann spent nearly a century making microphones before it made a headphone. The NDH 30 is its second, arriving in 2022 as the open-back follow-up to the closed NDH 20, and the brief was unusually literal: reproduce the sound of a Neumann KH monitor rig, calibrated with the company's MA 1 system, on your head. Frequency-selective absorbers inside the cup are there specifically to remove the high-frequency lift most headphones carry.

That brief is why it splits people. Reviewers who mix for a living tend to describe it as the most honest thing they have put on their ears; listeners who came for pleasure describe the same tuning as polite, dry, and about a hundred grams too heavy. Both are hearing the headphone correctly — they just want different things from it.

The overview

An open-back studio reference tuned deliberately flat, and measured that way by two independent rigs. Sources agree strongly on the neutral, unhyped balance, on genuine detail retrieval, on precise imaging, and on an aluminium build that outlasts its plastic rivals. They split on almost everything to do with enjoyment: whether the flat low end reads as clean extension or missing punch, whether a measured 1.5–3.5 kHz dip is clarity or lost bite, whether the softer top octave is honesty or a lack of air, and — most sharply — whether 352 g on a narrow headband is comfortable at all. Fit matters more than usual here: the drivers are angled and off-centre, and measurements show the tonality shifting several dB as the earcup moves.
