Moondrop Old Fashioned

The short version

What to know.

A $25 open-back on-ear that sources agree is featherweight, easy to drive, open-sounding for its size and unusually repairable thanks to its detachable 2-pin cable. Every measurement rig shows the same steep sub-bass roll-off as Koss's KSC75, a strong 2–3 kHz upper-midrange and a recessed 4–6 kHz region, so bass is light by consensus and the sound is mid-forward. Opinion splits on how that adds up. A majority — most editorial reviewers among them — hear a natural, well-balanced tuning with standout vocals and smooth, non-fatiguing treble; a sizeable minority, many of them Koss owners, hear it as thin, bright or shouty in the upper mids and prefer the Koss sets. Comfort is widely praised thanks to the very light clamp, though the bare steel headband bothers some heads and large heads can run out of adjustment. Build is budget plastic around a steel band; the detachable cable is welcomed even though opinions on the stock cable vary, and a few owners report a faulty cable, pads dented in shipping or confusion over the 2-pin polarity with aftermarket cables. It isolates nothing and leaks freely. Most sources call it an outstanding value; a minority still think a Koss is the better buy.

About this product

Moondrop's open-back on-ear headphone (model MD-HP-032), launched in November 2025 at $24.99. The same headphone is sold with a 3.5 mm cable (the standard version), a 4.4 mm balanced cable or a USB-C cable with a built-in DAC; the cups take any 0.78 mm 2-pin cable without ear hooks, and Koss-size pads fit.

The Old Fashioned is Moondrop's first wired on-ear headphone: a 40 mm dynamic driver in clear plastic cups, hung from a bare steel telescopic headband in the style of the foam-padded Walkman headphones of the 1980s. At $25 it lands squarely on the Koss Porta Pro, KSC75 and KPH40 — the budget on-ears that have owned this corner for decades — and adds two things Koss doesn't: an IEM-style 0.78 mm 2-pin detachable cable and cups that pop off the headband for modding.

It became a quick community favourite, with measurement rigs, reviewers and Koss loyalists all lining it up against the headphones it imitates. That makes it a good subject for an overreview: nearly everyone agrees on what it is, and opinion splits sharply on whether its mid-forward, bass-light tuning is the best on-ear tuning at the price or simply thin.

A good fit for

  • Vocal, acoustic and podcast listening where midrange clarity matters more than bass
  • Long sessions at a desk or around the house, thanks to the light clamp
  • Anyone who wants a Koss-style on-ear with a replaceable cable
  • EQ users happy to add a bass shelf

Think twice if

  • You want bass weight or rumble without EQ
  • You're sensitive to upper-midrange forwardness
  • You need isolation, or will use it in quiet shared spaces
  • You already own a Koss on-ear you like
  • You have a large head or are bothered by a bare metal headband

Common ground6

  • Sub-bass rolls off steeply, like a Koss KSC75 — light bass is a given
  • Very light and easy to wear, with a gentle clamp
  • Easy to drive from a phone or dongle

Points of contention4

  • Tonality: one of the best-balanced on-ear tunings at the price, or thin and bright
  • Mids: natural, forward vocals, or upper mids that dominate and sound shouty
  • Treble: smooth and safe, brighter and uneven, or rolled off — and placement on the ear shifts it

Sources split: a majority hear one of the best-balanced on-ear tunings at any price — natural and mid-focused; a sizeable minority hear a thin, bright, bass-light sound and prefer Koss. The split tracks taste in bass and upper mids more than any disagreement about the graph.

Measured

Six squig rigs agree on the shape: deep bass falls 16–20 dB from 500 Hz to 20 Hz, 2–3 kHz sits 1–5 dB above an HD 600 on the same rig, and 4–6 kHz sits 5–11 dB below it on five of the six. oratory1990 (GRAS 45CC) rates it 63/100 against the Harman target before EQ, and his correction adds about 14 dB of low shelf and cuts 8 dB around 3 kHz.

vs. listeners — The graph supports both camps: against a diffuse-field-style target the midrange is well judged, while against Harman it is bass-light with too much upper mid. Super* Review's 'brighter tilt' is the missing bass rather than extra treble.

What to keep in mind 5

  1. A read of where reviewers and owners land as of October 2026, about eleven months after launch — long-term durability reports are still thin.

  2. Owner star ratings skew positive, since they mostly come from people who chose to buy it; on Amazon, sound quality is the topic owners are most divided on.
