M-Audio BX4

The short version

What to know.

A compact powered pair whose one lab-style measurement (Weeb Labs) found an uneven response — a broad rise from 2 to 7 kHz, a port hump near 80 Hz and diffraction around 10 kHz — with a predicted in-room response that is closer to reasonable. Sources agree on a good stereo image and stage, generous output and bass for the size, and a useful set of inputs and tone controls. Opinion splits on the overall voicing (pleasant and near-neutral vs coloured), the treble, whether it is usable for mixing, background noise on some units, an automatic standby mode that cannot be switched off, reliability, and value against rivals such as Edifier's MR4.

About this product

The 4.5-inch BX4 desktop pair launched in late 2020 (sometimes listed as the BX4 D3): one powered speaker drives a passive partner over a 3.5 mm cable. The BX4 BT is the same speaker with Bluetooth added, and several reviews tested it, so both are covered here. Not the smaller BX3, or the BX5 D3 and BX8 D3, which are sold singly. A pair costs about $139 in the US as of October 2026.

M-Audio's BX line has been a budget studio staple for years, but the BX4 that arrived in late 2020 is a different kind of BX: a two-box desktop pair rather than a self-contained monitor sold singly. One cabinet holds the amplifier, the inputs and a front aux and headphone jack, and feeds its passive partner over a 3.5 mm cable; a rear switch decides which side it sits on, and two knobs trim the bass and treble. A pair costs about $139 in the US; the BX4 BT adds Bluetooth.

Magazine and video reviewers mostly like it for the money — loud, bassy for its size, with a good stereo image. The arguments are over how even its sound really is, whether it is a mixing tool or a multimedia speaker, and an automatic standby mode that some owners can live with and others cannot.

A good fit for

  • A first pair of desk speakers for a computer, DJ practice, podcasting or beat-making on a tight budget
  • Small rooms where bass and loudness for the size matter more than accuracy
  • Desks where the speakers can be raised or tilted so the tweeters point at your ears

Think twice if

  • You need a monitor to make final mix decisions — the one measurement and several reviewers say look elsewhere
  • You want speakers that stay on through silence or quiet passages
  • You are sensitive to sibilance or treble glare
  • You want Bluetooth (pick the BX4 BT) or XLR inputs

Common ground4

  • A good stereo image and a wider stage than the size suggests
  • Loud and bassy for a 4.5-inch desk speaker, though it lacks the scale of bigger monitors
  • Well equipped: balanced TRS and RCA inputs, front aux and headphone jacks, bass and treble knobs and a left/right switch

Points of contention7

  • Voicing: pleasant and near-neutral for the money vs an uneven, coloured measured response
  • Treble: smooth and clean vs an audible problem around 10 kHz
  • Mixing: workable for budget production vs a multimedia speaker you can't trust

Sources split. MusicRadar finds it pretty good but slightly sweetened; Amazona (2020), Guitar Command, Juno, Performer Mag and TechnikLoft call it fairly neutral or flat for the money, and a Reddit owner found it more even than an Edifier R1280T. Weeb Labs' measurement shows a "rollercoaster" on-axis response, ASR regular AnalogSteph calls it multimedia rather than reference, an Amazon owner says it colours the sound, and a Reddit blind test (with Edifier and PreSonus rivals) heard it as muddy.

Measured

Weeb Labs (posted on ASR; outdoor ground-plane measurement below 500 Hz merged with gated measurements at 1 m above it, tone controls at 0 dB): an uneven on-axis response with a broad rise between 2 and 7 kHz, a port hump around 80 Hz and several resonances. The woofer runs without a crossover; only a protection capacitor sits in front of the tweeter. spinorama.org's preference score from this data is 3.3 out of 10 (6.0 with an ideal subwoofer).

vs. listeners — The same measurer found the predicted in-room response "somewhat reasonable" and in line with in-room measurements — which helps explain why reviewers listening at a desk hear a fairly balanced speaker while the on-axis curve looks rough.

What to keep in mind 5

  1. A read of where the reviews stand as of October 2026. Only one detailed measurement of the BX4 has been published, so most of the tonal arguments rest on listening.

  2. Several reviews tested the BX4 BT, which M-Audio and reviewers describe as the same speaker with Bluetooth added; their sound impressions are pooled here.
