Kali Audio IN-5

The short version

What to know.

A tri-amped, front-ported three-way studio monitor with a coaxial midrange and tweeter, sold singly at $449 (about $900 a pair). Erin's Klippel data shows a response within ±1.5 dB from 50 Hz to about 7 kHz, an on-axis treble dip above that which Kali attributes to the coaxial design, and bass to about 42 Hz (−6 dB), for a spinorama.org preference score of 5.12. Reviewers and owners agree on precise imaging and a deep soundstage, a broadly neutral balance, strong punch for the size, generous placement EQ and exceptional value. They split on the lower midrange (clean to some, coloured or boxy at volume to Sound On Sound, bonedo and an owner) and on hiss up close. A minority finds the treble dark and the bass loose or light without a subwoofer, and several critics found the cabinet thin.

About this product

Kali's 5-inch three-way coaxial monitor, launched in February 2021 on the company's '2nd Wave' amplifier platform. There has only ever been one IN-5, so listings that call it 'IN-5 v2' or '2nd Wave' mean the same speaker; the IN-5-C is the same speaker fitted with a wall and ceiling bracket. Not the larger IN-8 V2, the IN-UNF desktop system or Kali's pricier SM-5. Sold one cabinet at a time: $449 each, about $900 a pair, in the US as of October 2026 (it launched at $349 each).

Kali Audio's IN-5 is the smaller sibling of the IN-8: a 5-inch woofer below a 4-inch midrange with the tweeter mounted at its centre, each driver with its own amplifier. The coaxial top end is meant to act as a single point source, so the stereo image stays focused close up and as you move. It arrived in early 2021 with Kali's quieter '2nd Wave' amplifiers from the start, and a cabinet that is tall and deep for a 5-inch monitor.

It is sold one cabinet at a time, now $449 each, so about $900 for a pair; most of the early reviews were written when a pair cost $700. A Klippel measurement, a Korean lab's data and years of studio and hi-fi use give it a long record, from reviewers who found nothing else like it at the price to owners who wanted more bass or more sparkle.

A good fit for

  • Nearfield mixing at 0.5–2 m where stereo imaging matters, in small to medium rooms
  • Desks and walls where a rear-ported monitor would struggle, thanks to the front port and boundary EQ
  • Hi-fi listeners who sit close and want a precise, neutral desktop pair

Think twice if

  • You listen from more than about 2.5 m away or want living-room volume
  • You want sparkle or a flattering, exciting tuning — a minority finds it dark or boring
  • You need deep bass without a subwoofer for bass-heavy or orchestral work, or want the IN-8's extra bass for little more money
  • You have a small desk: the cabinet is 38 cm tall and 28 cm deep

Common ground5

  • Precise, stable imaging and a deep, layered soundstage, credited to the coaxial midrange and tweeter
  • A broadly neutral balance that mixes can be trusted on
  • Deep, punchy bass for a 5-inch woofer at nearfield distances

Points of contention2

  • Lower midrange: clean to AudioTechnology and owners, coloured or boxy at volume to Sound On Sound, bonedo and a Thomann owner
  • Noise: silent at the seat for most, audible very close up to a Korean lab and a few owners — the RCA input and gain setting matter

Mostly heard as neutral and honest, which monitor users count as praise: AudioTechnology, both video reviewers, most Thomann buyers and a Taiwanese owner. Sound On Sound found the balance slightly dull with a touch of midrange emphasis, curable with the +2 dB treble switch. One ASR owner found it so neutral it became boring for music.

“Easily some of the most flat and articulate monitors I've tried at this price range.”

The Time Preservation Society (YouTube)

“While I found the IN‑5’s inherent tonal balance slightly dull, its midrange emphasis provided a good dose of useful mix detail.”

Phil Ward, Sound On Sound

“There is a neutralness to these speakers that enters actively boring territory and ruins enjoyment.”

Klippel NFS (Erin's Audio Corner, tweeter axis, switches flat): on-axis within ±1.5 dB above 50 Hz until about 7 kHz, then a wide dip and a rise above 14 kHz (linearity −5.08/+3.64 dB, 80 Hz–16 kHz). spinorama.org's preference score is 5.12 on Erin's data (7.13 with an ideal subwoofer) and 5.64 on Kali's own data.

What to keep in mind 5

  1. This is a read of where reviews and owners stood in October 2026. Newer rivals keep arriving at this price, including Kali's own models.

  2. Prices are for a pair; the speaker is sold one at a time. Most of the praise for its value was written when a pair cost about $700, not today's roughly $900.
