A measurement-competent all-in-one whose reviewers agree on the basics and argue about the price. Audio Science Review measured distortion far below audibility (SINAD about 112 dB at both the RCA and headphone outputs), 1.1 W into 33 Ω and 268 mW into 300 Ω on the standard unit, and recommended it; JDS's own bench puts the Boosted trim at 2.3 W. Editorial reviewers and owners describe a silent background with sensitive IEMs, perfect channel balance at any volume, ample drive for everything short of HE6/Susvara-class planars, and a knob that is the reason people buy it — the MK2 fixed the wobble that the original was criticised for. Opinion splits three ways. Whether it has a sound at all: most hear a wire with gain, but one long-form reviewer hears rolled-off air and a competent-but-uninspiring presentation, and ASR's purists rank its 2013-era converter a generation behind. Reliability: loaner units and most owners report nothing, but a handful describe lockups or sound dropouts cured by a power cycle, early-MK2 knob defects and one dead unit — each resolved by JDS support, and the lockup addressed in the October 2024 firmware. And value: the knob, channel balance, US assembly and support against Topping, SMSL and JDS's own Atom stack for less; ASR's 296-vote poll landed on 'Fine' more often than 'Great'. Whether the $49 Boosted option matters is its own argument: reviewers of demanding planars say yes; most owners, including Boosted owners, never leave low gain.

About this product

Covers the 2023–2024 MK2 revision of JDS Labs' third-generation Element — PCB 3.09, the discrete optical-encoder knob that replaced the original's wobbly 9 mm encoder, and firmware 2.5 with the two-band parametric bass/treble EQ — in both power trims: standard (1.3 W into 32 Ω, $449) and Boosted (quad output buffers, 2.3 W, +$49). The DAC and amplifier are identical to the original 2022 Element III, and every Element III takes the EQ firmware, so 2022 reviews of the standard unit describe the same electronics. Not the Element II (analogue pot, RCA input, no display) and not the Element IV that replaced it in November 2024 (3.2 W, USB-C, 12-band PEQ via the Core app). Discontinued — JDS lists it under retired products — so as of September 2026 it is a used-market buy at roughly $200–$400.

JDS Labs' Element III was the Illinois workshop's flagship all-in-one from January 2022 until the Element IV took its place in late 2024: a flat black square with one enormous knob on top, a tiny OLED window beside it, a single quarter-inch jack on the front and everything else — USB-B, optical, RCA pre-outs, the power switch — hidden round the back. Inside, an ESS ES9018K2M feeds a rail-to-rail OPA1692 gain stage on ±15 V rails from an external 16 VAC transformer, and for the first time in the line the volume is digital: perfect channel balance down to silence, and an auto-gain scheme that flips to high gain by itself as you turn past 0 dB.

Two later options define the version reviewed here. From late 2022 a Boosted build added a second pair of output buffers for $49, taking 1.3 W into 32 Ω to 2.3 W; and in June 2023 the MK2 replaced the original encoder — which JDS admits was designed to spin loose and had drawn thousands of complaints about wobble — with a machined steel shaft on optical sensors, while firmware 2.5 gave every Element III a two-band parametric tone control. It was well liked, well measured and, at $449, argued over from the day Amir published his bench. It is also retired: JDS now points buyers at the $549 Element IV, and the MK2 turns up used for $200–$400.

A good fit for

  • Sensitive-IEM listeners who want a genuinely silent desktop source with channel balance at whisper level
  • Anyone who wants one small box, one big knob and no gain switch to think about — consoles included, via UAC1
  • Used-market buyers: at $200–$400 the value argument that dogged it new largely disappears
  • Owners of hard-to-drive planars, if the used unit is a Boosted

Think twice if

  • You want balanced output, coaxial or Bluetooth input, or a remote — it has none of them
  • You buy on measurements per dollar: a Topping or SMSL, or JDS's own Atom 2 stack, measures as well for less
  • You need a real parametric EQ: the two-band tone control has fixed corners and no Q — the Element IV's 12-band Core EQ does
  • You want a display you can read from a chair: the OLED faces up and is about a penny tall

Not in dispute: nobody calls it underpowered. Amir measured 1.1 W into 33 Ω and 268 mW into 300 Ω on the standard unit and called both excellent, with no clipping at 300 Ω and an output impedance near zero; his only shortfall was the notoriously hungry Dan Clark Stealth, which ran out of gain at maximum. JDS's bench gives 1.3 W standard and 2.3 W Boosted into 32 Ω, 584 mW into 150 Ω and 146 mW into 600 Ω. Reviewers drove HD 800 S, Edition XS, Arya, ZMF Caldera, 600 Ω DT 990s and 13 Ω Dan Clarks without complaint; Scientific Audiophile found it would go louder into his Dan Clarks than an RME ADI-2 before distorting. The one live question is the $49 Boosted option. About three-quarters of the weight says the standard unit is enough — Headfonia, HiFiHeadphones and WaveTheory reserve Boosted for HE6/Susvara-class planars, and owners on Reddit and JDS's own store (several of them Boosted owners) report never leaving low gain even with an HD 800 S or Arya. The remaining quarter — Audiophile-Heaven, and Ear Fidelity, who felt demanding planars lose punch on the standard unit — says buy it anyway.

My requirement here is > 100 milliwatts and we have 2.6 times that so you should be good with high impedance headphones.

With planars, especially more demanding, you can feel that you start to miss out on the punch department.

I would always recommend going for the boosted version, if you have any over-the-ear headphones, although besides HIFIMAN HE1000 Stealth and Audeze LCD-5, most headphones will not require you to even use the high gain mode.

Manufacturer (APx555): 1.3 W (6.43 VRMS) standard or 2.3 W (8.68 VRMS) Boosted into 32 Ω, 584 mW into 150 Ω, 146 mW (9.37 VRMS) into 600 Ω, output impedance under 0.7 Ω, auto-toggling gain of 1.0× and 4.73× (+13.5 dB). Boosted is the same board 'assembled with quad output buffers' — two per channel — on the same ±15 V rails, so it adds current, not voltage swing, into low-impedance loads; into 150 Ω and above the two trims are rated identically.

  1. A read of where the reviews land as of September 2026 — and the Element III MK2 is no longer sold new, so this is partly a used-market snapshot; the Element IV ($549) is JDS's current answer to most of the criticisms here.

  2. The only professional bench is of a launch-batch 2022 unit in the standard trim. The MK2 changed the knob and firmware, not the electronics, and the Boosted stage adds current rather than voltage, so the numbers carry over — but no independent lab has measured a Boosted unit.
