HIFIMAN Susvara

The most worshipped headphone in the hobby, and the one that measures worst against its own legend.

The original open-back Susvara, launched in 2017 as HIFIMAN's flagship above the HE1000 and still sold new at its launch price of $6,000. It is NOT the 2024 Susvara Unveiled ($8,000), which removes the grille, swaps the gold conductor layer on the diaphragm for silver and in doing so drops impedance from 60 Ω to 45 Ω and raises rated sensitivity from 83 dB to 86 dB — a genuinely different and slightly easier-to-drive headphone that shares only the name. Nor is it the HE6 or HE6se, the much cheaper older planars whose power appetite it deliberately revived. Specs: 100 mm planar driver with a nanometre-thickness gold-traced diaphragm, stealth magnets (their first use), the Window Shade grille, 60 Ω, 83 dB/mW rated, about 450 g, dual 3.5 mm TRS connectors, 6.35 mm and 4-pin XLR cables in the box. One production change is documented rather than announced: early units shipped with a novelty velour drawstring bag and no case, while units from the 2020s ship a leather carrying case. HIFIMAN never discounts the new unit — the cheaper routes are its own refurbished ($3,299–$3,599) and open-box ($4,499) stock, or a $4,000 trade-up into the Unveiled.

HIFIMAN's Susvara arrived in 2017 at $6,000 — double the price of the flagship it replaced, and at the time matched only by the Abyss AB-1266. Nine years later it is still $6,000, still in stock, and still the headphone the rest of the summit gets measured against. It is also, notoriously, one of the hardest headphones ever made to drive: 60 Ω at a rated 83 dB/mW, thirsty enough that owners routinely run it off loudspeaker taps.

What makes it worth mapping is that the argument about it is unusually well-defined. Almost every listener who has spent time with one describes reference-grade resolution, a stage with extraordinary depth, and a tuning so even they would not reach for EQ. Then Audio Science Review measured it, found distortion where the ear is most sensitive and drivers that buzz when pushed, and refused to recommend it. Both readings are honest — and once you line up which test rig each source used, the disagreement stops looking like a mystery and starts looking like a diagram.

The overview

An open-back planar flagship that inspires more agreement about what it does and more argument about whether that is real than any other headphone at the price. The consensus is firm where it counts: imaging, separation and depth are close to universally called the best or near-best the reviewer has heard, with depth in particular singled out; comfort is excellent for a 450 g flagship, and several reviewers call it the most comfortable summit headphone they have worn; bass is fast, textured and — measured against the headphone's own midrange — genuinely flat to 20 Hz rather than rolled off, though it sits several dB under a bass-boosted target and nobody calls it a slam machine; and it is very hard to drive, with one reviewer's arithmetic putting it at twenty times the power the HE1000se needs for the same loudness. The disagreements are the interesting part, and three of the four track the measurement rig rather than the listener. Tonality: about three-quarters of sources hear the most neutral reference tuning in HIFIMAN's range, while the harshest measurement source reads a bass shortfall and a 1–3 kHz deficit against a Harman-style target. Dynamics are contested chiefly as an amplifier question: most sources say it scales enormously with serious power, while an owner who drove it from a normal desktop amp and one veteran reviewer both say the power panic is overstated. Build is solid but not luxurious, and the criticism of the cables and accessories is one of the few things every source agrees on. Being open-back it isolates essentially nothing and leaks more than most. Value is the loudest split of all: the price has not moved since 2017, the strongest measurement source grades value zero out of ten, and the standing counter-argument is HIFIMAN's own HE6se and Arya at a fraction of the money — against which sit reviewers who say that if they had the money this is the headphone they would buy.

Sources split, but lopsidedly. Roughly three-quarters — including reviewers who own it and reviewers who measure it — hear the most neutral, least coloured tuning HIFIMAN has made, and several say outright that it is the first flagship planar they would not EQ. Against that stands the harshest measurement source, which reads the same headphone as tonally deficient: short of bass and short through 1–3 kHz relative to a Harman-style target. The curve underneath is not really in dispute; what a target is FOR is.

Measured

Four rigs, two classes, and the class predicts the verdict. Computed from sai's own raw exports, level-matched to the Harman over-ear 2018 target across 200 Hz–1 kHz, the Susvara sits about 6.1 dB below target from 20–40 Hz, 3.9 dB below through 1.2–2.2 kHz, 0.6 dB below at 2.5–4 kHz, level at 4–6 kHz and 1.9 dB above from 10–16 kHz. Measured instead against its own 200 Hz–1 kHz level, the bass is only 1.1 dB down at 20 Hz — flat, not thin. Audio Science Review's GRAS 45C reads the same deficits and calls them faults. Both MiniDSP EARS rigs read it as exemplary: Soundnews calls it 'the most linear and extended frequency response I've measured around here', and headphones.com finds 'The bass extends like a flat line all the way into the sub-bass on the HPN compensation.'

⚠ vs. listeners — Nobody is misreading a graph; they are choosing different rulers, and two of them are different instruments. Against a bass-boosted Harman target the Susvara is measurably short of bass and short through the presence region. Against its own midrange — or against a diffuse-field-style compensation, which is what both in-house rigs used — it is close to a straight line. Both MiniDSP EARS users say plainly that their rig is not industry-standard and should not be compared with ones that are, so the disagreement is partly instrumental and partly a question about whether a bass shelf belongs in the target at all.

The single most contested claim about this headphone, and the argument is substantive rather than sour. About seven-tenths of the weighted sources call the resolution reference-defining — one gave it a 10/10 he had never awarded before, another says it out-resolved his own $14,000 loudspeakers, and 'detail monster' recurs verbatim across independent reviews. The objective camp's counter is specific: measured resonances and distortion in the band the ear cares most about, plus a lifted top octave, would produce exactly this impression of extra information without any extra information being there.

The two rigs that published distortion data disagree flatly. Audio Science Review finds 'Even at 94 dBSPL we are exceeding our target between 4 and 5 kHz', reports that one dB past 114 dBSPL 'the drivers bottom out and just buzz', and calls the group delay the messiest it has seen across the audible band. Soundnews, on a MiniDSP EARS rig, reports 'Their overall THD sits at 0.27% which is world class by my standards' with the highest distortion in the treble rather than the bass, plus a fast decay and clean waterfall. Amir's own hedge matters: he notes at least one other published measurement shows a similar distortion issue, so the finding is not a broken sample.

⚠ vs. listeners — This is the deepest conflict in the record and it does not resolve. One GRAS-class rig measures serious distortion and resonance where hearing is most sensitive and a driver that audibly gives up at high level; one in-house rig measures the lowest distortion its owner has recorded. Both then listened, and heard opposite things. What the objective camp adds is a mechanism rather than a taste — that resonances and a lifted top octave manufacture the sensation of resolution — and the subjective camp has no equivalent rebuttal beyond the listening itself. A buyer should know that the one thing everyone praises is the one thing the measurements most seriously question.

The two in-house rigs say flat, and their listeners call it the smoothest, least fatiguing treble HIFIMAN has produced. Both camps agree it never turns metallic or harsh; they disagree about whether there is anything up there to tame.

Computed from sai's raw exports against the Harman over-ear 2018 target, 10–16 kHz averages 1.9 dB above target and peaks about 6.0 dB above at ~12.8 kHz, with 4–6 kHz sitting level. Audio Science Review, on a different GRAS-class rig, arrived at the same place by ear: after EQ he writes 'I broke my usual rule of not messing with > 8 kHz and dialed in a negative notch filter at 12.7 kHz.' The MiniDSP EARS rigs disagree — headphones.com reports 'it doesn't have too much energy above 12khz like many other flagship planars tend to go for', with its only caveat 'a bit more energy at 7khz than some may prefer'. sai's own fix is a 3 dB cut at 11,500 Hz, Q 2.5. The deep notch near 9.5 kHz on GRAS traces is a pinna artifact, not an audible dip.

The two MiniDSP EARS readings converge on flat, and both of their owners state that their rig is not IEC-standard and should not be treated as reference. Above 8 kHz, ear-canal geometry also varies enormously between people, which sai flags himself. So 'the smoothest treble HIFIMAN has made' and 'it can get a tad hot and zingy' are both honest reports, and which one a given listener recognises depends on their ears as much as on the headphone.

About three-tenths of the weighted sources hear the midrange as deliberately polite — set slightly back in the mix, and at the objective end simply deficient through 1–3 kHz. The rest hear the opposite: the most lifelike, most believable midrange they have encountered, with vocals as the headphone's best trick. The dip is about 4–5 dB deep near 1.75 kHz, it is consistent across rigs, and both camps are listening to it — with enough presence just above it that clarity is never the complaint.

The dip is measured and agreed. Computed from sai's exports, 1.2–2.2 kHz runs 3.9 dB under the Harman over-ear 2018 target, deepest at about 4.9 dB down near 1.75 kHz, while 2.5–4 kHz sits within a dB of target. The EQ prescriptions converge on filling exactly that: sai uses a +3.0 dB peak at 1,700 Hz with Q 2.0, and Audio Science Review's filters at 1,900 and 4,500 Hz 'filled in the treble area'. headphones.com measures the same feature and reads it as benign — 'The mids have a slight dip near 2khz' — crediting 'sufficient energy at 3-5khz to provide clarity for female vocals and piano tones'.

Two physical variables the sources name themselves widen the gap further — sai's positional measurements show that where the headphone sits on the head shifts the balance, and Currawong reports the same thing by ear; and pad rolling measurably lifts the region, with sai noting that velour and heavily perforated pads bring up 1–3 kHz.

Computed from sai's raw exports, the Susvara sits only 1.1 dB below its own 200 Hz–1 kHz level at 20 Hz and 0.7 dB below through 50–120 Hz — essentially a straight line into the subsonic — while measuring about 6.1 dB under a Harman-style target from 20–40 Hz. sai reports it 'extends impressively down to 20Hz and below human audibility with minimal roll-off' and that 'Throw a 10dB bass shelf on it and the Susvara will do just fine', which is the excursion headroom the flat trace implies. headphones.com measured the same shape on a different rig and drew the same distinction against the Harman bass elevation.

⚠ vs. listeners — The 'plenty of bass' versus 'lacks bass' argument is entirely about the reference point, and the graph resolves it. There is no roll-off: the headphone plays 20 Hz at essentially the same level as its midrange, which is why listeners describe real sub-bass rumble and why it EQs up so cleanly. It is also several dB under a target that deliberately boosts bass, which is why one measurement source records a deficit. Where sources genuinely differ is on tactility rather than level — and even the enthusiasts concede a good dynamic driver hits harder.

Around two-thirds of sources report that the Susvara scales further with power than anything else they have owned — one describes it as thin and lifeless from a well-regarded desktop amp and transformed by speaker taps — and rate the result among the most physical in headphones. The dissent comes from two credible directions: the strongest measurement source finds the driver simply runs out at high level, and an owner who ran it and an Arya from the same modest amp says the power mythology is overblown. Everyone agrees the attack is very fast; the decay is unusually long, which is a design choice, not a flaw.

Measured

The power requirement is arithmetic, not opinion: 60 Ω at a rated 83 dB/mW, which Soundnews turns into 'for a loudness level of 110 dB (fairly loud), HE1000SE would need only 25 mW and Susvara would need 502 mW – that’s almost 20 times more power'; sai measures 60 Ω and reads sensitivity lower still, at 79 dB/mW. The ceiling is measured too — Audio Science Review found that one dB past 114 dBSPL 'the drivers bottom out and just buzz', and that a Benchmark AHB2 power amplifier ran out of voltage before a Topping A90 did, so the limit there was the headphone, not the amp.

⚠ vs. listeners — Two things are true at once and the sources talk past each other. The Susvara needs genuinely unusual power to reach a given loudness — that is spec-sheet arithmetic nobody disputes. Whether it needs a speaker amplifier to sound RIGHT is the actual argument, and it is not settled: Soundnews reports a night-and-day transformation on speaker taps, Currawong ran it on capable headphone amps and does not feel a speaker amp is necessary, and an ASR poster who owned one and drove it from a Topping A90 calls the amp issue immensely overblown. Amir's finding cuts across both camps: past a certain level no amplifier helps, because the driver itself gives out.

Instrument separation, layering and above all the sense of depth are called precise, realistic and in several cases unmatched — one reviewer says nothing he has heard places the depth of a chamber recording as convincingly, another scores it 9.8/10 and singles out never losing background information in busy passages. The only qualification anywhere is comparative rather than critical: some rivals throw a wider image, none place things better.

A genuine strength and, for a summit-fi headphone, a differentiator. At about 450 g it is substantially lighter than the flagships it competes with — roughly 250 g less than an LCD-4 — and the wide perforated leather suspension strap plus deep angled pads spread that well enough that several reviewers name it the most comfortable flagship they have worn. The only reservations are mild: one measurement source marks it slightly weighty at 7/10, and one reviewer noticed the metal strap on his head.

These are quite possibly the most comfortable flagship headphone I’ve ever tried.

For scale, the LCD-4 it is usually compared against passes 700 g and the AB-1266 TC reaches 630 g.

Highly rated with a consistent qualifier, which is why this reads as agreement rather than a split: nearly every source calls the presentation open, airy and unusually deep, and nearly every source also says it is not the widest they have heard. Depth and layering are where the superlatives land — one reviewer ranks its depth realism first among every headphone he has tried. The Sennheiser HD 800 and Meze Elite are repeatedly named as wider; amplification and even covering the grilles by hand measurably change the impression, and one listener finds the perspective simply does not work for him.

Out of all the headphones I’ve heard to date, the Susvara tops the list when it comes to the realism of depth in music.

Two findings that sit side by side. The headphone itself is judged solid and better than HIFIMAN's reputation suggests — CNC-machined and hand-polished metal, a full-metal headband and yoke, user-replaceable pads and connectors, and reviewers who expected creaking and found none. The accessories are the one thing every single source criticises: the included cables are called horrendous, gummy and unworthy of the price, there was no case at all on early units, and the hand-finishing does not match Japanese rivals at similar money. HIFIMAN's historic reliability record shadows it, though no source here reports a failure.

The Susvara is surprisingly well built.

An aluminium frame with the Window Shade grille and a wood-veneer ring, a full-metal headband and yoke, clipped pads and dual 3.5 mm TRS sockets, with a 6.35 mm and a 4-pin XLR cable supplied and no 3.5 mm cable — a deliberate omission, since the headphone cannot be driven from a portable. Soundnews confirms the construction: 'Their metal structure was created via CNC milling and hand polishing'. The cable criticism is unanimous and specific: 'the cables are horrendous' (an owner of two-plus years), 'The cables that are in the box are gummy feeling and not very professionally finished', 'Those default cables need an upgrade'. Packaging did improve — the 2017 unit shipped a novelty velour bag and no case, later units a leather carrying case.

Isolation

None, by design, and less than most open-backs. The Window Shade grille is built to put as little as possible behind the driver, so sound passes both ways almost unimpeded — one source estimates 1 to 3 dB of attenuation and calls even that generous, another warns that people nearby should expect to hear everything. Expected for the type and not a fault, but it rules out offices, shared rooms and anywhere quiet is required.

People around you should prepare some ear-plugs, as these will be leaking a good deal of noise outside their cups, more so than regular open-back headphones are doing.
