Focal Alpha Twin Evo

Two 6.5-inch woofers on their side give deep bass and loud, clean output at a price reviewers call a bargain, but the mids, the width of the sweet spot and the space it needs all divide opinion.

Focal Alpha Twin Evo

The short version

What to know.

A ported 2.5-way monitor whose published measurements show reasonably flat on-axis response, bass to about 38 Hz with a port tuned near 30 Hz, low distortion at normal monitoring levels, and narrower horizontal dispersion than a conventional two-way. Sources agree that it plays very loud without strain, that its bass is deep for the money, that it is detailed enough to expose mix problems, and that mixes made on it translate. They mostly like the tweeter, though several turned the high shelf down a decibel or two. They split on the midrange (a strength to some, coloured or a little shy in the lower mids to others), on whether the listening window is generous at a desk or narrow and finicky in a bigger room, and on value next to the cheaper Alpha 65 Evo. It is large and heavy, and its controls are on the back, with unmarked knobs.

About this product

The flagship of Focal's second-generation Alpha Evo powered monitors, on sale since February 2022: a horizontal cabinet with two 6.5" Slatefiber bass/mid drivers either side of a 1" aluminium inverted-dome tweeter, three Class D amps (2 × 50 W + 30 W), two front slot ports, XLR, TRS and RCA inputs, bass and treble shelving, and a rear switch that sets which woofer runs up to the tweeter. Sold one cabinet at a time and meant to lie on its side only. Not the Focal Shape Twin or the Twin6 Be / ST6, nor the smaller Alpha 65 Evo. A pair costs about $1,278 in the US as of November 2026.

Focal's Alpha Twin Evo tops the French company's entry-level Alpha Evo studio range. It lies on its side, with two 6.5-inch woofers made of recycled carbon fibre either side of the aluminium inverted-dome tweeter Focal has used for decades. A switch on the back makes the inner woofer play up to the tweeter while the outer one handles only bass, which Focal calls a 2.5-way design. Each cabinet is 55 cm wide and weighs 12 kg.

Since its 2022 launch the studio press has treated it as a lot of monitor for the money, with bass and loudness close to what much bigger speakers deliver. The doubts come from measurement-minded forums, which question the sideways layout and its horizontal dispersion, and from listeners who disagree about its midrange.

A good fit for

  • Nearfield studios with a deep desk or stands that want big-monitor bass and loudness without a subwoofer
  • Rock, pop and electronic producers who work loud and want headroom
  • Buyers stepping up from 5- or 6-inch budget monitors who want more scale for about $1,300 a pair
  • Mix engineers who value a detailed, revealing top end and can use the high shelf

Think twice if

  • Your desk is shallow or narrow, or the monitors must stand upright
  • You'll listen from several metres away in a living room, where the narrow horizontal dispersion bites
  • You judge natural vocals and acoustic instruments above all and want an uncoloured midrange
  • You'd rather have the smaller Alpha 65 Evo's measured directivity and lower price for nearly the same bass extension

Common ground7

  • Plays loud and clean, at close to midfield levels, with low measured distortion
  • Deep bass for the money, specified to 38 Hz with a port tuned near 30 Hz
  • Detailed enough to expose mix problems, and mixes made on it translate

Points of contention5

  • Mids: a forward, detailed strength vs a mild boxy coloration or shy lower mids
  • Listening area: a wide, stable sweet spot at the desk vs measurably narrow horizontal dispersion that suits larger distances poorly
  • Imaging: rock solid and precise for most vs slightly flattened for Sound On Sound

Mostly heard as balanced to neutral. MusicTech calls it satisfyingly flat from top to bottom, bonedo very balanced before any EQ, and Sound On Sound spot on through the midrange, though SOS also lists mild coloration and slightly overblown bass among its cons. Mix found it crisp and bright enough to trim the top, and MixbusTv balanced once he had done the same. Owners on Thomann and Audiofanzine call it neutral and natural; two forum commenters who don't own it say it isn't known as the most neutral monitor.

“From top to bottom, the Alpha Twin Evos sound crisp, phase coherent and satisfyingly flat.”

Robbie Stamp, MusicTech

“In basic tonal balance terms through the vital midrange, the Twin Evo sounds spot on for monitoring, too”

Phil Ward, Sound On Sound

“Der 2,5-Wege-Monitor klingt schon ohne Klangkorrekturen über den gesamten Übertragungsbereich sehr ausgewogen.”

Peter Könemann, bonedo.de ("Even without tone correction it sounds very balanced across the whole range")

Measured

spinorama.org's preference score, computed from Sound & Recording's anechoic data (scanned from the published graphs, so approximate), is 4.86, or 6.01 with a subwoofer. SOS's own FuzzMeasure on-axis curve shows "a few mild lumps and bumps" and nothing untoward.

What to keep in mind 5

  1. A read of where the reviews and measurements stand as of November 2026. The Alpha Twin Evo has been on sale since 2022, and newer monitors around the same price keep moving the comparison.

  2. Few labs have measured it. The fullest data was scanned from a magazine's published graphs, so the figures here are approximate, and no full anechoic measurement of the kind available for many rivals exists.
