FiiO K15

The K17's chassis, knobs and streamer for a little over half the price — reviewers call it the value pick of the line; owners say the firmware took a year to catch up.

FiiO K15

The short version

What to know.

A ~$549 desktop DAC/amp that sources broadly agree packs more into the box than anything near its price: three headphone outputs, XLR and RCA line/pre-outs, analogue inputs, coax and optical in, Wi-Fi and Ethernet streaming, LDAC Bluetooth, local USB playback, a remote and a 10-band PEQ. Its 3 W balanced output drives everything reviewers tried, the background is silent with sensitive IEMs, and the build is widely praised. Opinion splits on what it sounds like — neutral to most, slightly warm to others, and indistinguishable from good cheaper DACs to a third group — and, more sharply, on day-to-day use: reviewers love the controls, while owners report a long list of firmware and EQ bugs that FiiO has fixed only gradually. No independent bench has measured it yet.

About this product

The K15 with two AKM AK4497S converters and a built-in switching supply (with a 12 V DC input for an external one), on sale since mid-2025. Not the K17, which shares the chassis but uses AKM's AK4191 + AK4499EX pair, a linear supply, a 31-band DSP EQ and digital outputs, and not the K17 R2R or K13 R2R.

FiiO's K15 is the cheaper sibling of the retro-styled K17: the same aluminium chassis, clicky switches and 3.93-inch touchscreen, the same discrete Class AB headphone amplifier design, and the same all-in-one brief — USB, optical, coaxial and Bluetooth DAC, analogue pre-amp, Roon Ready and AirPlay endpoint and USB-drive player in one box. To reach $549 FiiO swapped the K17's flagship AKM converters for two of AKM's newer AK4497S chips, replaced the linear supply with a switching one (plus a DC input for an external supply), cut the equaliser from 31 bands on a DSP to 10, dropped the digital outputs and trimmed rated power from 4 W to 3 W.

Reviewers in the summer of 2025 mostly agreed those cuts were well chosen, and the K15 picked up recommendation badges quickly. The longer story belongs to owners: a launch firmware that crashed, dropped EQ profiles and hid the VU meters from USB users, and a streamer that only speaks Roon and AirPlay.

A good fit for

  • A single desktop hub for headphones, active speakers, a CD player and a turntable
  • Roon or AirPlay users who want a streamer, DAC and amp in one box
  • Owners of power-hungry planars who don't want to pay K17 money
  • IEM users who need a silent floor alongside lots of power

Think twice if

  • You stream mainly through Tidal, Spotify or Qobuz Connect, Google Cast or DLNA apps
  • You rely on the PEQ with bit-perfect exclusive-mode playback, or need MQA and EQ together
  • You only need a USB DAC/amp — several sources point to cheaper single-purpose boxes such as the Topping DX5 II
  • You need digital outputs, a 12 V trigger or a ground-lift switch

Common ground5

  • Plenty of power: 3 W balanced drove every headphone reviewers and owners tried, including hard planars
  • A silent background with sensitive IEMs
  • More inputs, outputs and roles (DAC, amp, pre-amp, streamer, USB player) than rivals at the price

Points of contention2

  • Sound: neutral and transparent, slightly warm, or no different from good cheaper DACs
  • Day-to-day use: reviewers praise the controls and touchscreen; owners report months of firmware and EQ bugs

Strong agreement that 3 W balanced is more than enough: reviewers and owners drove planars, an HE6se V2, an HEDDphone 2 GT and a Susvara without running out. The single-ended jack has well under half the balanced power.

“The K15 serves as a powerhouse for planar and dynamic headphones, with a robust 3000mW output driven by a discrete class AB amplifying circuit.”

Headfonics (James)

“The headphone output is both powerful and clean, providing up to 3W from the balanced outputs with no noticeable noise floor on any of the headphones that I have used.”

angst92, owner review (Head-Fi)

“Auch ein HEDDphone 2 GT spielt laut und vor allem kontrolliert auf.”

Miniklangwunder (German: "Even a HEDDphone 2 GT plays loud and, above all, controlled.")

Measured

FiiO rates the balanced outputs at ≥3,000 mW per channel into 32 Ω and ≥700 mW into 300 Ω, and the 6.35 mm output at ≥1,400 mW into 32 Ω and ≥180 mW into 300 Ω (ultra-high gain, 1% THD+N), with output impedance under 1 Ω single-ended and 1.5 Ω balanced. No independent bench has verified these. Pragmatic Audio measured 13.5 W at the wall playing an HD 600 (16.5 W for the K17).

What to keep in mind 7

  1. A read of where the reviews land as of October 2026. FiiO has updated the firmware twice since launch, and some owner complaints here may already be fixed.

  2. No independent lab has measured the K15 yet, so its power and noise figures are FiiO's own.
