The clearest point of agreement. Every reviewer who plugged in full-size headphones — HD 650, HD 58X, Sundara, HE400se, Ananda Nano, Arya Organic — reports them driven with headroom, and several call the balanced desktop-mode output desktop-class. Two caveats recur. Desktop mode needs a second cable and a 5 V/2 A supply, and at least one owner found it drops out on a cheap power bank whose voltage sags; and the extra output is current-limited, so FiiO's own balanced 16-ohm figure is lower than its 32-ohm figure. The one real dissent is Currawong's: he hears desktop mode as louder and sharper, not more detailed, and hears the amplifier strain into a hard load. On sensitive IEMs the problem runs the other way — Headfonia found desktop mode too loud at 10 of 100.

FiiO's own Audio Precision table, which no independent bench has yet checked: balanced, desktop mode, 650 + 650 mW into 32 ohms and 125 + 125 mW into 300 ohms; balanced on battery, 300 + 300 mW into 32 ohms; single-ended 280 + 280 mW (desktop) and 140 + 140 mW (battery) into 32 ohms, 30 + 30 mW and 20 + 20 mW into 300 ohms. On the balanced output the desktop-mode 16-ohm figure (480 + 480 mW) sits below the 32-ohm one — the output is current-limited into low impedances. Output impedance is rated below 1 ohm single-ended and below 1.5 ohms balanced.
Sources split, and the split is about two different things. On the noise floor there is near-unanimity: owners of Shure SE846, Sennheiser IE900 and FiiO FA19 report a silent background on battery, and FiiO rates the floor at 2–3 microvolts. The dissent is electromagnetic pickup. A run of owners hear buzzing or popping when the BTR17 sits near a phone on a cellular network — on trains, on bike commutes, during calls — and one methodical report found it louder on the 4.4 mm output and independent of the volume setting. FiiO's staff have said on Head-Fi that a phone on 4G near the BTR17's antenna produces slight noise, that a Bluetooth-mode interference bug was fixed in firmware V0.51, and that noise on the power-in port comes from the supply. Separately, a few owners describe a loud pop if the unit is switched off while playing, and a faint tick in one channel with very sensitive IEMs.

FiiO rates the noise floor below 3 µV single-ended and below 2.2 µV balanced (A-weighted) with an SNR of at least 126 dB on the balanced output. On the interference, FiiO's own Head-Fi staff wrote in February 2025 that "In Bluetooth mode, the BTR17 connection is prone to interference. This BUG had been improved by FW, starting with V0.51 version." and that "when the BTR17 is near the phone antenna, there will be some slight noise, and this noise will be covered by the music sound".
⚠ vs. listeners — The spec and the complaints do not contradict each other. A 2 µV floor is why the sensitive-IEM owners hear nothing; the buzzing is radio-frequency pickup in the analogue stage, which a noise-floor figure does not describe, and which FiiO concedes exists. Whether you meet it depends on your phone, your network, and how close the two sit in a pocket.

The largest group hears it as flat and transparent — TechPowerUp measured nothing but a flat response, the Head-Fi showcase reviewers call it reference-neutral, and Reddit's most-read long-term review says no coloration at all. A second group hears a mild tilt: Headfonia's elevated sub-bass and spiced lower treble, Audioreviews' warmish U-shape with a touch of digital smoothing, Mobileaudiophile's touch-warm-of-neutral. A third, smaller group hears an edge — Currawong's sharp, forced THX house sound, one owner's cold and emotionless against a Shanling UA3, another's drier and more clinical against an AKM-based player. Nothing independent settles it: the only distortion numbers are FiiO's.

FiiO's published figures — THD+N below 0.00035% at 1 kHz, −10 dB into 32 ohms on the balanced output in desktop mode, SNR of at least 126 dB, frequency response 20 Hz–80 kHz within 3 dB — describe a converter and amplifier that should be inaudible. No independent lab has published a distortion or SINAD measurement of the BTR17; the independent bench work that exists (ASR members jkim and d1m0n) covers the equaliser's accuracy, not the analogue stage.

That leaves the tilt and the edge to be explained by the amplifier's behaviour under load, by codec, by the pairing, or by expectation — and with no third-party bench there is nothing to arbitrate with.

Nobody disputes the list: LDAC and aptX Lossless, three input modes, desktop mode, a ten-band parametric EQ with ten user slots and a shared preset database, a web configurator, filters, harmonic-distortion controls, charge protection, car mode, a microphone. The dissent is that the list does not all work as described. Two ASR members measured the BTR17's PEQ and found the USB inputs mis-translating filter Q and mangling shelf filters while the Bluetooth input measured correctly — an owner's RMAA capture found the same — and FiiO had not fixed it as of this snapshot, having instead announced a successor. With any EQ profile engaged on the 3.5 mm jack the volume stops at 40 of 60, which is FiiO's automatic 12 dB headroom cut; owners who bought it as a power upgrade over a Qudelix 5K call that a downgrade. The app is described as slow and counter-intuitive by supporters and critics alike, and a support-directed reset wiped one owner's saved profiles. And the radio: several owners, including one with two consecutive-serial units, get cut-outs at three to five metres with a body in the way, while others roam a two-storey house; FiiO's staff note the antenna is in the back panel, under your hand.

jkim's ASR bench (August 2025) on peak and low-shelf filters, run on the BTR15, KA15, KA17 and BTR17: on the peak filters the Q input is not translated correctly — "It seems that Q = 1.0 is misinterpreted as Q = 0.707." — and on the shelves, "BTR17 (USB mode) and KA17: Same issue of Q factor mistranslation was observed." d1m0n's REW run found the same: "I discovered the same problem with the BTR17 in USB connection mode. PEQ via Bluetooth worked fine." An owner's RMAA capture on Reddit: "The shelf filters simply don't work, they turn to peak filters." jkim separately: "The automatic -12 dB preamp cut in all FiiO devices is a bad design." On the radio, FiiO's staff: "the hand fully holding the back of the BTR17 (the antenna is here ) will also have some effect on the distance".
⚠ vs. listeners — The measurements explain the owner reports rather than contradicting them: an EQ profile built over Bluetooth will sound wrong plugged into a PC or a console, which is exactly the "underwater" complaint that sent one owner back to a Qudelix 5K, and the 12 dB cut is the invisible volume ceiling. The one genuine disagreement is range, where two owners with matched units and two who roam freely may simply own different batches.

Everyone likes the knob, the bright screen, the physical mode and desktop switches and the on-device menu; several reviewers say this is the first BTR you can operate without the app. The complaints are about living with it. Battery life is the big one: FiiO's eight to nine hours were measured on AAC at volume 18–23 of 60 with the screen off, editorial units got seven to ten, and owners on LDAC or high gain into planars report four to six — one, three and a half — with a gauge that sits at 40% and then dies. The case is loose enough to slide off in a pocket and has a snap loop instead of a clip; the EQ menu makes you scroll past eight factory presets to reach your own; and at 73 grams it is a Bluetooth receiver you notice.

FiiO's rated battery life is ≥9 h on the 3.5 mm output and ≥8 h on the 4.4 mm output, tested over Bluetooth on the AAC codec at volume 23 and 18 of 60 respectively, high gain, screen off, EQ off, into 32 ohms. Owner timings: about 7 h (Reddit, IEMs), about 6 h on LDAC at low gain (Head-Fi), about 4 h on high gain at volume 45–50 into a Noire X (Head-Fi), 3–3.5 h at volume 22 balanced, high gain, LDAC (Reddit); one owner logged 100% to 40% in seven hours and 40% to empty in one.

Broadly praised — a CNC-machined, sandblasted aluminium body, tactile buttons, a knurled aluminium knob, a leather-textured back, screen protector pre-applied, case in the box — and the 2-star Head-Fi reviewer scores the physical build five out of five before turning on the software. The dissent is specific. A recurring minority find the knob wobbly enough to worry about, and a few find the back panel hollow-sounding and the switches loose; FiiO's answer, posted to Head-Fi and its FAQ, is that the sleeve between knob and encoder needs play by design and passed a 40,000-cycle test. Isolated failures have surfaced by late 2026: a back panel whose adhesive let go, a battery that stopped charging after a year, case stitching coming loose.

Most sources land on the same sentence — nothing else at $200 does all of this — and TechPowerUp's Editor's Choice, Headfonics' Top Gear award and a 124-upvote Reddit five-star review say it in different registers. The dissent is not about the hardware. It comes from owners who bought the BTR17 to replace a Qudelix 5K and found the EQ, the app or the radio a step backwards, from the ASR regular who calls FiiO buyers beta testers, and from the battery-disappointed who would rather have a DAP at the price. Amazon's own tally on value for money is nearly even, six positive to five negative, against a 4.4-star average.
