Fifteen dollars, one dynamic driver, and no two listeners describing the same earphone.

The original CRA: one 10 mm dynamic driver with a 3.8 μm composite-polymer diaphragm and a dual-magnet motor, sold from late 2021 at $14–$15. It is not the CRA+, a roughly $30 set built on a different driver. CCA also revised the CRA itself partway through its run without changing the name — later boxes carry a monochrome line-art design, and on the same measurement rig the revised unit reads about 4 dB less sub-bass, about 3 dB more upper midrange and roughly 7 dB less energy at 16 kHz. Everything below describes the original except where the revision is named. Both are now hard to buy new: Linsoul lists it out of stock in every variant and the Amazon listing shows as unavailable.

For most of 2022 the CCA CRA was the answer to every "what should my first IEM be?" thread on the internet. A single dynamic driver in a translucent KZ-family shell, sold for about the price of a sandwich, it arrived from CCA — Knowledge Zenith's sister brand — with no celebrity tuner attached and promptly outsold and out-argued sets many times its price.

It also became one of the most divisive budget earphones ever made. The reviews that launched it are almost uniformly delighted; the people who actually lived with it are split down the middle, and CCA quietly changed the tuning partway through the run without renaming the product. What follows is an attempt to sort out which disagreements are about taste, which are about your ear tips, and which are about which CRA you happen to own.

The overview

An ultra-budget single-dynamic IEM with a large, genuinely deep sub-bass shelf and a lively, peak-laden top end. Sources agree almost unanimously that it was extraordinary value at $15, that it resolves more detail than the price suggests, and that the stage is flat and ordinary. They split hard on nearly everything else: whether the bass is basshead-dominant or merely forward, whether the treble is sparkly or sibilant, and whether the shell and cable are a bargain or a liability. Professional reviews skew far more positive than owner sentiment — Amazon buyers give it 4.2 out of 5, but RedditRecs' tally of Reddit opinion on the original runs only 55% positive, with driver failure and channel imbalance among the recurring complaints. A silent mid-life revision, measurable on the same rig, cut the bass shelf and the top-octave extension and lifted the upper midrange, so a CRA bought late is not the CRA the 2022 reviews describe.

  • Extraordinary value at its $14–$15 asking price — the single most repeated claim about it

Bass

Sources split on quantity, not quality. One camp hears a dominant, basshead-adjacent sub-bass shelf; the other hears something forward but controlled, and a few hear it as outright short of slam. The graph backs the first camp — and Prime Audio names the mechanism behind the second, warning that seal is what decides how much of that shelf you actually get.

Measured

On Aftersound's IEC-711-clone rig the original CRA carries a sub-bass shelf of about +13 dB at 20 Hz and +11 dB at 50 Hz relative to 500 Hz, still +7 dB at 100 Hz — a large shelf that genuinely extends. The silently revised unit measures about +9 dB at 20 Hz on the same rig, roughly 4 dB less.

⚠ vs. listeners — A shelf that big cannot go missing acoustically, so the 'not enough bass' reports point somewhere else: to seal (Prime Audio tells readers to change tips if the lows feel absent) or to the later revision, which measurably has less of it.

Mids

Three readings, and the third is version-specific. Some hear a midrange that stays surprisingly clean and present for a V-shape; more hear it pulled back behind the bass; and owners of the revised unit report a new shoutiness the original did not have. The measurements make sense of all three.

Measured

Pinna gain on the original is modest: about +5.5 dB at 3 kHz over 500 Hz on the Aftersound export, and Fc-Construct measures "only about 5 – 6 dB at 3 kHz" independently — well under a Harman-style rise, which is why the mids sit behind that bass shelf. The revised unit reads about +8 dB at 3 kHz with its 2–4 kHz peak moved down to 2.5 kHz.

⚠ vs. listeners — The 'clean mids' and 'recessed mids' camps are describing the same curve from opposite ends: low pinna gain means the upper mids never shout, which reads as natural to some and as distant to others. The 'shouty' camp is not describing that curve at all — it is describing the revision, which adds roughly 3 dB exactly where shout lives.

Treble

The most argued-over part of the earphone, and it splits three ways: peaky and sibilant, sparkly but never harsh, or — from one reviewer — safe and short of air. The graph shows a real +10 dB peak at 4.7 kHz plus genuine energy above 10 kHz, which is enough to feed both of the first two readings. Tip bore and source warmth are repeatedly named as what tips a listener from one camp into the other.

Measured

The Aftersound export puts a peak of +10.0 dB at 4.75 kHz on the original — the sibilance region — with a further large rise around 8 kHz and still about +3 dB at 12 and 16 kHz. The revised unit keeps the 4.5 kHz peak but falls to about −4 dB at 16 kHz.

⚠ vs. listeners — The curve supports two of the three camps at once: the 4–5 kHz peak is real and large, and so is the energy above 10 kHz, so "sibilant" and "sparkly and extended" are the same fact heard by different ears. The reading it does not support is the third — on the original at least, there is plenty up top. Both Fc-Construct and the coupler's own limits caution that the exact height of the 8–10 kHz peak is a rig artifact.

The graph is unambiguous — a big bass shelf, modest pinna gain and lifted treble is a V-shape — and most sources say so plainly. What is genuinely odd is that two independent listeners describe the same earphone as natural and balanced rather than scooped.

Measured

Normalised to 500 Hz, the original measures +13 dB at 20 Hz, +5.5 dB at 3 kHz and +10 dB at 4.75 kHz — the textbook shape of a V, with the trough sitting in the lower midrange.

⚠ vs. listeners — Because the pinna gain is unusually low for a modern budget set, the CRA's V has no shouty upper-mid peak sticking out of it. That is very likely why a minority hear it as warm and even: the scoop is real on the graph, but nothing in the midrange calls attention to it.

Split roughly evenly, and the two sides are talking about different parts. The shell looks and feels far better than $15 — a polished metal faceplate over translucent resin, with a detachable cable. What sits behind that is a faceplate glued on thinly enough to fall off, a cable most reviewers call cheap, and a rate of channel imbalance and driver failure that shows up in owner data as clearly as it does in forum threads.
