Audioengine is an independent American audio company founded in Austin, Texas, in 2005. It makes powered desktop and bookshelf speakers, subwoofers, DACs and amplifiers, and is best known for compact powered pairs such as the A2+, whose left speaker holds the amplifiers and inputs and drives a passive right speaker.

Audioengine's handsome all-in-one flagship: reviewers loved its warm, wide stage and big bass for the size, critics and some owners hear the same soft top end as muffled, and an ageing digital board is the owners' complaint.

The powered pair that made Audioengine's name, now with Bluetooth: loud, wide-staged and handsome at $499 a pair — but its wired twin measures a scooped lower midrange, owners argue about its bass in both directions, and loan-unit praise for the build sits beside owner failure reports.

The desk pair everyone recommends first: clear, well imaged and beautifully finished at arm's length, but coloured and bass-shy in lab measurements, fussy about aim, sometimes hissy, and no longer the obvious buy at $299 a pair.
