Astell & Kern SR35

The short version

What to know.

Reviewers agree the SR35 is quiet with sensitive IEMs and that its size, one-handed grip and volume wheel are the reason to buy it, and nearly all agree its processor is slow. Opinion splits on power: most drove real headphones, and a few warn off hard loads and current-hungry IEMs, which fits the one independent bench. It splits on sound too, heard as warm and smooth, as neutral and clean, or occasionally as short on detail. The closed OS divides those who value its focus from streaming users who found apps slow or unreliable. Press units drew praise for build, while owners report swollen batteries, detached back panels, a dead screen and microSD trouble. Value divides as well, and at launch price it now competes with its own successor.

About this product

Astell & Kern's 2023 A&norma SR35 digital audio player, in Charcoal Gray — four Cirrus Logic CS43198 DACs, a 3.6-inch slanted screen and a closed Android-based OS. It replaced the SR25 MKII, and has itself been replaced by the larger, open-Android PD5.

The A&norma SR35 is the small one in Astell & Kern's range: a 184-gram aluminium body with the brand's slanted 3.6-inch screen and a jewel-like volume wheel, holding four Cirrus Logic CS43198 DACs that can drop to two to save battery. It borrows the "New Generation AMP" design from A&K's far costlier players, and its Android-based OS is deliberately closed, running a short list of streaming apps rather than Google Play.

It launched at $799 in May 2023 as A&K's entry-level player, and What Hi-Fi? gave it an award. A&K has since replaced it with the $1,049 PD5, which drops the slanted screen for a bigger one and opens up Android, and US stock of the SR35 has largely run out. Owners on Head-Fi still argue for it three years on, and a few have now had to replace its battery.

A good fit for

  • Listeners who want the smallest serious player they can carry, and care most about size and sound
  • Local-library listeners who rarely open a streaming app
  • Owners of sensitive IEMs who want a black background
  • Roon users who want a pocket endpoint, not a controller

Think twice if

  • Streaming is your main source: owners report slow, sometimes unreliable apps and no Google Play
  • You want to drive planars or current-hungry low-impedance IEMs: the bench and some owners suggest it runs short there
  • You want a fast interface or a big screen: nearly everyone calls it slow, and the 3.6-inch display is small
  • You'd buy a used one without inspecting it: check the back panel, since owners report swelling batteries
  • You want the newest A&K: the PD5 has replaced it with a bigger screen and open Android, at a higher price

1 Strong agreement1 Mostly agree5 Divided opinions

Common ground5

  • Very quiet with sensitive IEMs, including the hiss-prone ones
  • Its size, weight and one-handed grip are the main reason to buy it
  • The processor is slow, especially in streaming apps, whether or not that bothers you

Points of contention5

  • Power: enough for most headphones, or short on hard loads and current-hungry IEMs
  • Sound: warm and smooth, neutral and clean, or short of detail and no real step up
  • The closed OS: a welcome focus on music, or a locked-down system that makes streaming unreliable

Sources split, largely by load. Most drove real headphones without trouble: What Hi-Fi? on Sony's MDR-Z1R, TechRadar on FiiO's open-back FT5, Audio46 on a 250 Ω DT 1770, eCoustics on an Arya Stealth, T5p and TH900, an owner's HD6XX on low gain. Others warn about the difficult end: Bloom Audio says it can struggle with planars, one owner cautions against high-impedance gear driven directly, and another finds current-hungry low-impedance IEMs fall flat. Use the balanced jack for headphones.

Measured

Astell & Kern publishes only no-load voltage: 6 Vrms balanced and 3.1 Vrms unbalanced on high gain. Sandal Audio's bench (balanced, highest gain, 1 kHz, up to 1 % distortion) confirms that into high loads, at about 17 Vpp (about 6 Vrms) from 150 Ω up. Below that the voltage falls away: roughly 15 Vpp at 100 Ω and 10 Vpp at 55 Ω, read off the chart. Sandal's curve sits close to the far costlier SE300 and SP3000, which supports A&K's claim of a shared amp design.

Astell & Kern publishes output as no-load voltage only, with no milliwatt figure: 3.1 Vrms unbalanced and 6 Vrms balanced on high gain, 2.1 and 4 Vrms on normal gain. The 20-hour battery figure is for 16/44.1 FLAC in dual-DAC mode, on normal gain, unbalanced, at volume 50 with the screen off. The signal-to-noise figure is for the balanced output; unbalanced is rated at 127 dB. Storage is 64 GB plus one microSD slot of up to 1 TB. What to keep in mind 5

  1. A read of where reviewers and owners land as of November 2026. Most press reviews date from 2023, and A&K has released many firmware updates and a successor since.

  2. Only one independent bench was found, and it covers output into a load, not noise or distortion. The chart figures are approximate, and the other numbers here are A&K's own.
